Mocha - Hitfilm, BCC or standalone?

Video_flaneur wrote on 9/22/2017, 6:00 PM

I have VP13 and plan to upgrade to VP15 once things settle down. I own Hit Film Pro 4 which includes Mocha, although I am yet to use it in any serious fashion. Mocha have just released a new version.

So here is my question. I prefer to work 'within' Vegas where possible with plugins being invoked from the timeline and the resultant changes being replaced on the timeline. For Mocha planar tracking, would other users recommend the Hitfilm, BCC or standalone Mocha path?

It depends. I have BCC 10 Complete and most of the FX can utilize Mocha within the effect. I like it that way. Why not download the free trial of the BCC 10 Complete for Vegas and try it out.

I also use BCC 10 and have played around with mocha in HitFilm 3. One really needs to think through what you're looking to do. For nearly everything I do BCC 10 meets the need. If you need to manipulate large areas of your video the version in BCC may be limiting. The nice thing about the BCC version is you can use it to apply many of the effects. One limitation that sometimes frustrates me in Vegas is the need to apply it as a composite layer on some of the effects such as corner pinning which is one of its main uses. Nesting often solves it, but it makes the project a little clunky if it gets very complex. For witness, spot and line removal and several other effects it works great.

One of the positives of mocha over BCC for tracking is that it can continue tracking when tracking points leave the side of the screen or go behind objects. It has the intelligence to keep moving the unseen tracking points in relation to the tracking points it still can see. BCC needs near perfect conditions & if a tracking point goes of screen it will fail.
