Moonlight Sonata

For your enjoyment, the first movement by a HS student played in an informal setting.

A few dropped notes, but the phrasing and understanding of the music are excellent, I think.

Serious pianists, I'd entertain your responses, even though the piece is far from being competition-ready. Recorded with an H4 under less-than-ideal circumstances.

Just a quick note.

Not been a pianist myself, thought it might be of some help
listening to some observations of someone whom I know is.

Last note in the triplet too emphasised

This causes melody line to be distracted from.

There are crescendos in the incorrect places as well as retarded ritardauos.

Don't hurry the melody line, let it sing out more.

There are some suspect fingerings which are causing a number of wrong notes.

Pedalling needs to be cleaner.Make sure to clear pedal in the beat.

Don't introduce retarded ritardauos where not required.

Maintain Tempo as a constant throughout the movement.

Make sure of the octave fingering before playing.

Don't create speed with playing at forte unless asked for.

Keep triplet fingering in the right hand very even & Arpeggio fingering needs to be worked on.

Don't change the speed of these triplets.

There are incorrect notes that can be corrected by better hand position over the notes, before playing.

Overall

Take more time to clearly distinguish the melody from the "accompanying" Arpeggio line.
This line of movement and colour is "only" to support the Melody

Well done & keep up the good work.

It was starting to look a lonely post....

Thanks so much for your reply. Indeed it was becoming a lonely post . . .

It is reassuring to me that all but two of the notes given (thanks to whoever provided these!) I have given to the student dozens of times; he is very stubborn and very gifted. Insists on swallowing a song whole rather than working on sections, hates technique drills, and has a comeback for every comment, but will come home after sports practice and play the piano for four hours without eating. Think I'll share these notes to let him know that I'm not the only one hearing it this way . . .

BTW, he plays the CPE Bach Solfeggietto in under a minute.

And thanks for your kind words.
