More print to tape Problems

Hi there

Like so many, I love Vegas 3 but I have a problem with Printing back to DV - drop outs, vision and audio disturbances - the only things that print well are the bars and tone in the leader! It captures beautifully with virtually no dropped frames.

I have read everything on the postings on this and am at a loss. I'd be grateful if anyone can offer advice.

I have an Athlon 1600+ with 256mb DDRAM and a 60gb hdd partitioned into C and D running Windows XP. Oh and a Firewire card with Texas Instruments settings, as well as a CD burner and wireless keyboard and mouse. I have tried with files on the C and D drives and get the same result - what looks like data interruptions. It's always the same result even on different programmes like Premiere so I think it must be a hardware configuration issue. Even printing an untouched clip gives the same result. I am also using the DV PAL template (I'm not in the US) .....

I have tried:

1. Updating the Via Drivers
2. Defragging the drives (not that necessary - the pc is new)
3. Moving the 1394
4. Reinstalling Vegas
5. Messing around with the settings and having to reinstall XP
6. Checked and rechecked that DMA is enabled on all drives
7. I was pleased to see that the 1394 had it's own unique IRQ - here's the list:

Does anything jump out as a fault to anyone?
I'd be really grateful for some suggestions

What I am doing is ctrl-Alt-del to bring up the task manager, then under the "Processes" Tab, find "Vegas30.exe" (Vidcap.exe if using video capture), right mouse click on it then select "Set Priority" and Select HIGH (do not select Realtime), Answer Ok to the warnings. Pop back into vegas and away you go (you will have to do this evertime you start vegas with the purpose printing to tape.

I have done this multiple times now and the problem has dissapeared.

Note Never had the problem under 2000, it appeared with XP

I did read an ealier post of yours suggetsing that and tried it to no avail - hmm but since then I have totally changed the set-up - so I tried again - unfortunately I got similar results to my previous feeble attempts at laying back to tape. Thank you anyway for suggesting.

Not too sure about three lines USB on IRQ9. My Win. ME setup list two USB host controllers on different IRQs. Don't know what to do to fix. What, if any, usb devices do you use ?
The main problem could be your Network card sharing an IRQ with the Video card. Pull the network card and see what happens.
I'd post this question at rec.video.desktop NEWSGROUP and see what the system gurus say. Hope you nail it down soon.
Background programs ? DMA set for HD? Auto play turned off for CD rom?

Hmmm the only USB device plugged in is the logitech keyboard and mouse combo - and I've tried putting in an old kb and mouse (corded)and had the same problem.

Thanks for the suggestion to remove the network card and see what happens - I'll wait for a techie friend to do that - i have already got into such a mess playing with the software!

YepI closed all the background programmes and made sure DMA was set (if available) for Hard drives. I am not sure how to turn the auto play off the CD Rom so I disabled it and tested printing - unsuccessfully.

Thanks Craig for trying. I have taken your advice and logged on to the newsgroup (first time I have ever done that!) you suggested.

If this is ever fixed I'll post back. Thanks once again.

Your lucky that you can print to tape. This is a copy of an e-mail I have sent to Sonic Foundry.

I’m having a problem with Vegas 3.00 capture and print to tape. I am able to capture OK from a Sony DV camera, although I am greatly mystified as to why capture wont recognise my camera at times. However, when it come to printing to tape it’s a different story.

1. The record to tape button is not present, however the camera transport is working OK.
2. When I open a file it does not come into view in the upper-left-side file window.


I am rendering using the standard template for AVI PAL. Fortunately, I have Video Factory capture 2.00, so I am able to print to tape. Also, I can print to tape from the timeline without any problem so its not an interface problem.

I have spent many hours of production time trying to get it working as well as seeking help from the Forum.

Will you be releasing a fix for what seem to be bugs in the program? If not, can you send some better information on how this program works.

Please make sure that you have valid disks setup in Disk Management. A better error message will pop in the next update if there isn't a valid disk in use, right now it just doesn't allow the device to be used.

You mean DV PAL, right?

Also, the record button is probably just hidden...try maximizing the vidcap application. Also, you should be able to use the menu for printing to tape.

Hi Deef

Yeah I checked out the faq many times ....and did most of what was there - except the calibration in point one - I couldn't find the "Other" tab and anyway I assumed the dropped frames were at the beginning of the transfer - this is constantly through the transfer process on edited pieces and just raw clips as well.

Er and what are UDMA 100 drivers and what's a mobo CD(sorry for being a so dumb ...)

I also posted my question on a newsgroup and there is some debate about one drive/two drives and one guy reckons that having a partitioned disk is simply compounding the problem - hmm what do you think?

i had a similar problem
here's how i fixed the problem
i was capturing from my sony dv camcorder
everything was fine
when i printed to tape the record button was greyed out
very frustrating
i printed to tape using a dv/analog converter which went directly into my vcr
truns out, all i had to do was the following and i was fine
1) file
2) capture video
3) options
4) preferences
5) uncheck "dv device control"
that was the problem
then print to tape and viola! problem solved
***make sure you "check" dv device control when you capture
i did this and it works great now

D'oh I just realised that mobo is motherboard. I put the CD in the drive and searched for UDMA - there was no result.

The more I read on news groups the more I think that maybe I need a separate Drive - or do you think I might get the same problems?

I have my system drive in two partitions. Main OS with extra space and a backup area. It has always worked fine for print-to-tape. I also have a WD 60 gig drive.
I'm starting to think your in VIA hell with no easy answer. Might want to go check out the VIA forums.
Then again, it might be something like a funky 1394/firewire cable.
Also might try the "support non-compliant devices" setting for your 1394/firewire card.
Go to Device Manager/View devices by type/click the + on the 1394 Bus Controller line/Right click the OHCI 1394 card line/Select Properties/Settings/check the box for "Support Non-Compliant Devices" Might do the trick, but I would think your captures wouldn't work either if this was it.

I'm ruuning win2000 on two machines with VV3 and capture and print to tape work flawlessly.
I capture to two drives striped together. These are ide 7200rpm drives. I would recommend using a separate drive or drives for your video storage.

Download a program called EndItAll and blow away everything else that you can. May help. May not.

However, you never mentioned the speed of your hard drive. I capture perfectly at 5400rpm and have occasional dropouts on print to tape. And that is with a 2nd hard drive. With only 1 hard drive handling both the OS and VV, this could be your problem.

I suggest buying a 2nd hard drive, bringing it home to try out, then making the call :-)

Well, my problem was 100% DMA related. I couldn't get my drives running at UDMA 100 until I downloaded and installed the VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Utility which allows me to configure my drives to the proper speeds. Strange that I had to go through that to get them running at their optimum speed.

Not really strange. I mentioned the Bus Master fix several times in the past year. Originally I could not get my CD burner to function correctly until I updated the bus mastering and I had just build a new system and the included drivers on the motherboard CD were already outdated. Fairly typical. You did also use a 80 wire cable for your drive too, right? You need to do both and of course have a motherboard and BIOS that supports the high speed drives. Once you got eveything set your hard drive should really fly along.

There has been some very interesting information on DMA hard drive se-up on this thread. I have a problem with a new Seagate Utr-DMA 100 it seems to be set up OK, however, I can't Capture onto it without lots of dropped frames.

I have been unable to solve my original problem of not being able to get the Print to Tape button to even be present, or to get the file I want to print to show up in the window. (My files are PAL 25fps AVI whic work fine in VF caputure and print to tape.)

I have written to Sonic about this but to date they haven’t replied.

I feel my problem is my lack of understanding of how the file structure is set up for capture and print to tape. Ther is almost no help in the manual or on-line help.
