Most likely a newbie question

Hey, I just have a quick (and most likely) obvious question about editing footage. I'm working of a movie out of order (based on what footage I get when). I finished one part and want to add a part before it. Is there anyway I can add it without overlapping causing me to have to move the other footage down and mess up my timing? If not, is there a way to lock some footage together so if I move it, it all moves together so I don't lose the timing? Thanks!

Go up to the toolbar and click on the Selection Edit Tool (it looks like a pointer). Then when you bring it down to the time line, you left click and drag the tool over all the events you want to move, it selects them and then you can move them as a big group.

Hello, newbie, from another newbie. So I'm not sure if I can give you as much help as others can, but it looks like I can give it to you quicker! :-) Check out the Auto Ripple mode (the odd looking icon on the toolbar that looks like a couple of boxes with a black arrow pointing left, about the middle of the toolbar). Its purpose is to force other events to slide to the right to make room for an insertion, or to the left to fill the gap of a deletion. There is something called grouping that I don't know how to do yet, but what you asked is definitely a part of the operation. Good luck.

These are all good tips... if you'll be doing a lot of this, ripple is a good thing to use.

Another option that is sometimes helpful is to "insert time". If you just need to insert something at the beginning, place your cursor at the beginning and then choose the menu option (Insert -> Time, I believe) and then specify how much time you want to add. Everything to the right of your cursor will move right, keeping your timing intact.
