Motion JPG not working in DVD Arch 4.5

Green Button wrote on 10/15/2008, 9:12 PM

I have version 4.5 of DVD Architect Studio (came as part of Sony Movie Studio Platinum 8.0), and am trying to burn a DVD with AVIs from my Canon camera.

When I use "movie inspector" in Quicktime to see EXACTLY what's in these AVIs, it says "Motion JPG Open DML 640x480".

On the Knowledgebase website, Sony has a FAQ for "what if video doesn't show up" -- and on that page it says "Vegas Pro 8, Vegas Movie Studio 8, and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition 8 (or newer) now offer MJPEG support." This is what I have. It ALSO says that earlier versions need a 3rd party codec -- and I even tried installing the Morgan Multimedia codec.

No dice. I get audio, but no video in DVD Architect Studio, in both preview and rendered versions.

Any help?

you might need a different codec.

or convert it to another format.

Hmm... your post doesn't feel like it helps much. Sorry.

- in theory, DVD Architect 4.5 is supposed to include support for Motion JPG, according to Sony's own site. Can anyone confirm this, or provide more specifics on how the support works?

- I gave the name of the specific Motion JPG codec used... and it plays just fine in WMP, Photo Gallery, Quicktime... every app other than Sony's apps.

Anyone have other ideas/suggestions?

thx

Firstly: Where is stated that Motion JPEG can be imported? It would help me too!

Secondly: You say you have "4.5 of DVD Architect Studio" - now IS this the same as DVDA 4.5? Would this have any bearing on this issue though?

At the moment I am looking at my DVDA Pro 5.0 - and I can't see this Motion Jpeg as an import option?

Need more info - maybe?

"Vegas Pro 8, Vegas Movie Studio 8, and Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition 8 (or newer) now offer MJPEG support."

This does not say that DVD Architect has MJPEG support, and as far as I know it does not.

If you are able to view these file in VMS then you should be able to use it to render the files to MPG2, suitable for use in DVDA.

The bottom line is that the MJPEG codec (especially from still cameras) varies so much from one manufacturer to the next that I think it'd be impossible for any software developer to keep them all straight. I have used a few ways to get MJPEG recognized in Vegas, and each way works for some MJPEG videos and not for others. At the moment, Vegas recognizes video from both my Canon camera and my Samsung camera, but the the latter is less reliable.

If you can get Vegas (or Vegas Movie Studio) to reliably work with your MJPEG video, consider that a blessing. Then use Vegas to render the video out to a more suitable format such as AVI (using a "normal" codec like Huffyuv, Lagarith or DV) or MPEG2 and give that new file to DVD Architect Studio.

It's going to have to be encoded to MPEG2 no matter where you do it, so you may as well do so in Vegas. No sense spending all this time trying to force a square peg into a round hole. Get Vegas to reshape the peg for you first. :)
