Motion Tracking more than one region

paul-marshall wrote on 8/10/2023, 4:06 AM

Could someone help me please by explaining (or pointing me at a tutorial) on how to add more than one region to motion tracking/ bezier masking in VP20 (411).
I have a clip with two car registration plates to blur. I dont have a problem blurring one region but cannot after much trying work out how to get two independent regions tracked, masked, and blurred in the same clip. I see the motion tracker has 4 regions that can be added and the bezier masking has 5 masks, though only one is enabled by default.

Adding a region in the motion tracking adds another motion tracker to the clip FX chain but there is only one bezier masking. I dont undestand how to link them all up.

What am I missing here in the workflow? All the tutorials I have seen are too simplistic.

As an example, you can try this

Thank you, that is a good tutorial but it is just another single region single mask. I'm happy with that. What I want to see is if say there was a second person in that clip. The only way I can do it is to render the first person to a new clip then use the same process for the second person.

Reyfox, At least that has more than one region but is adding picture-in-picture text and images. All good but i am trying to add a bezier masking EFX, ie gausian blur or pixillate. Or am I fundamentaly going about it all wrong?

@paul-marshall that is above my paygrade. I haven't used track motion much in what I do, so honestly can't answer it.

I would think it's possible, because you are working with 2 different regions. Have you tried it?

I think I have solved my problem.
And the secret is to start by adding the Bezier Masking FX to the clip efx chain. Because each clip has a Motion Tracking button or (Alt-M) I've always started there. That's not right although it works for one region. Maybe it is possible but I dont understand the fundamental relationship of tracking and masking, I couldnt make it work.

Anyway, add the Bezier masking fx to the clip and enable however many masks you need out of the 5 available. Set up each mask position and shape. There is no need to enable any keyframes. Now press the Motion Tracking button on the Bezier screen. The motion tracking window opens and you can then select Bezier 1.1, then Bezier 1.2 in turn from the drop-down and motion track as usual. Keyframes appear in each mask according to parameters you have chosen location, scale, perspective etc.
Enable 'Mask FX', Add a blur or whatever FX, move it before the mask in the chain and job done. Note there is no Motion Tracking effect in the chain.

Couldn't be easier - or could it!
