Motion Tracking NOT From Beginning Of Clip

Blastrio wrote on 11/16/2018, 10:31 AM

HI.

Is it possible to start motion tracking NOT from the beginning of the clip? I've tried a few times and nothing happens. I'm able to do it from the beginning of the clip no problem, but then if I need to stop the tracking for some reason, I am unable to restart it from the point I was at.

Thanks

Depends on what you do call a clip.
In Vegas a part of not devided video on the timeline is named an EVENT.
Motiontracking goes per event and if that event is to long you are able to devide that event into more than one by splitting.
On every event you want you can add your motion tracking.

Ok. So is it possible to start tracking anywhere on an event? Without splitting it into a new event and starting from the beginning?

Not what I was saying, I said this "Motiontracking goes per event and if that event is to long you are able to devide that event into more than one by splitting.

The way I understand it .. someone correct me if I am wrong ... You can start tracking within an event at any point, but the mask you create will start from the beginning of that event. Motion tracking is really just a bezier mask that creates it's own keyframes to follow an object. The mask is applied to the entire event.

Let's say you want to highlight somebody's head by making it Black and White. You would duplicate the track, placing it above the original and apply the tracking to the duplicated track. You would apply the B&W FX to the duplicated track so the original track below has color except for the masked part on the track above. You can track from any point on the duplicated track, but the mask will be there for the entire event .. not necessarily what you would want.

There are ways around this .. one is the suggestion above of splitting the event where you want to start tracking.

For me at least starting the tracking from anywhere else than the beginning of the event doesn't work. The small grey tracking window pops up for a fraction of a second then disappears and nothing happens.

Anyway, thanks guys.

As much as I hate it, I re-activated my subscription to Premiere. I need to get some work done. Vegas still has a lot of catching up to do to honor the "Pro" in its name.

I'm using VP16 Build 307 ... I can't reproduce the tracking behavior you descirbe, unless ... "the object being tracked moves out of view, is obscured, or becomes confused with other elements of the scene, tracking may stop automatically."

What I want to track is perfectly visible. Actually, it's even bigger from the point I want to track it (which is more or less in the middle of the event). When I press Tart Tracking, the tracking message window flashes for a fraction of a second then disappears and nothing tracks. I've tried it on two different computers with different clips and same result.

I actually like Vegas. Used it for many years. But now it just feels like an app that was abandoned and now is cutting corners while trying to catch up with the big boys.

No backwards tracking? What app doesn't have backwards tracking?

Hmmmmm ... just can't understand why I can't reproduce what you are seeing. Even if the tracking is not successful, it does not stop unless the object it is following goes out of frame or is obsured by something else. In my experience the tracking may not be what you want, but it tracks something. I can't get it to "flash for a fraction of a second then disappear -- and nothing tracks" ... Weird ..

I can't repro either. Here the tracking always starts from where I've set the timeline cursor.
