I think any kind of mouse that works with Windows will work fine with VMS.
I'm still using my 5-yr old optical mouse with no problems.

I am using Logitech M570 (wireless and with trackball). I think it is great.

You'll likely find lovers and haters for the M570. I love it. BUT, thumbs are not as motion-sensitive for a trackball as an index finger (typically). So for fine cutting, it sometimes makes life a bit more difficult.

I think it depends on how much editing you do vs. other work, how frequently you use keyboard shortcuts and how comfortable you are with trackballs. My suggestion is to go to your local office superstore, put your hands on a few (computer) mice and see how they feel. See how much effort it takes to click or how smooth they roll. Do you have lots of desk space (good for mice that move)? Do you work on a glass desk (if so do you need the mouse to be able to work on a transparent surface? I don't use the scroll wheel frequently for editing. Do you do a lot of photo editing too? If so, what about a tablet as your pointing device? So many options to consider.

Then there is the wireless vs wired discussion. I use a Logitech keyboard and a mouse both connected via the same Logitech wireless nano-receiver (USB).

In addition to a mouse, you might consider the Contour Shuttle. It helps jogging on the timeline as well as buttons for shortcuts and macros.

I use only wired Mice and Keyboards because I've had nothing but problems with wireless hardware over the years.

Anyway, I absolutely love the Logitech G500s FPS mouse. Once you set up the various buttons you can save, cut, copy and [alt} paste with your thumb and change DPI and wheel action with your forefinger, along with all regular mouse actions. Of course, you could set up the various buttons to do almost anything you can do with shortcuts.

It does take a little effort to learn where all the various buttons are located by feel, but once you learn, it becomes second nature. With my right hand on the mouse and left on the keyboard I can do 99% of editing. Of course, you need to move your right hand back to the keyboard for titles and other "typing" tasks if you're a touch typist.

Hope this helps.

A mouse is great .. but also consider adding a Contour Design Shuttle.

They come in X-Press and Pro models. I have the X-Press and it works great. You have 5 programmable buttons, a spring loaded ring (I use for multi-speed FF and REV), and a center spin wheel (for frame accurate selection) However it is USB, not wireless.

Hey Jillian,
I have a G500 as well but I can't get the custom mouse buttons to register in Vegas. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi back,

I am out of the country and can't get to my computer to give you software versions, but be sure you have downloaded and installed the latest version of Logitech's driver for their gaming equipment. (There used to be two versions, one for regular mice and keyboards, and a separate one for gaming mice. Not sure what might be available now.)

Next, make sure that windows is actually using the Logitech driver, and not the default Windows mouse driver. The windows driver will "recognize" the Logitech mouse, but it won't give you all the options. Once you have the Logitech driver installed and recognized, go to the mouse settings in Control Panel, make sure your mouse is selected, go to SetPoint Settings and select each button/wheel and give it your selected command (some you can select directly, others you have to use the "other" radio-button, then the selected function such as Ctrl-C.

At this point, I would re-boot and check the Mouse properties again to make sure everything was accepted properly.

Then you should be able to start Movie Studio and have all of the buttons work as planned.

Hope this helps,

Jillian
