DSICLOSUER:
This week is the first time I've used a MAC. That being said..
I'm taking a class.. they are filming on a JVC camera. They use Final Cut. I also want to take the footage home and edit in VEGAS. I get home... there's only sound and no video. I THINK I'm missing a codec ?

If that's the case.. can someone tell me where to get and and how to install ??
Thank you !

A lot depends on which codec that MOV file is using. They can be made up of any of hundreds of codecs.

Try opening the video file in a program like MediaInfo and post the resolution, frame rate and audio and video codecs it lists to this forum. Then we'll know what we're dealing with.

Please clarify --
Are you wanting to take the JVC footage or the Final Cut footage home?
Post MediaInfo details per previous reply.

Is the JVC an HM-700 series camera?
I ran into the exact same problem a year or two ago when I used my JVC camera to record in MOV instead of MP4 format. Nothing I tried could get the file to open on a PC until someone suggested the free XDCAM .MOV to .MXF converter from Convergent Design.
Good luck with it.

I used VLC to convert the .mov to .avi and it worked great. I can now view It in windows.. BUT....I can't get that .avi file to open in Vegas. So while I can view, I can not edit.

Use VLC to render it out as an MP4 (H264) file for your video and a WAV file for your audio.
I just tried this on the MOV files I mentioned earlier and it worked on Pro 10 and 12.

WOW... I you pinned the camera exactly.. How did you do that ?
I'm taking a class and they won't let us change the settings to save it to .avi.

I tried converting it in VLC.. no luck. But then I downloaded the Nano converted and it was very quick and very easy.

WAIT.. I take that back. I did have a problem at first.. and I don't know if this is maybe the root of my other problems. At first the conversion failed. Then I noticed the folder I was working in had some kind of funny character at the end of the name. I moved all of the .mov files to a freshly created folder and they converted without a hitch.

This is a 90% solution to my problem. Ideally, I'd like to just be able to read the .mov files..and.. I can't read these in Windows Media player, which means I can't share them with my partner. But this will be a great and easy work around. I can read them in VLC if I don't want to open up Vegas.. and if I want to share them I'll just render to MP4. And I will do my best to try not to shoot in .mov again.

THANK YOU!!!!

By the way....someone in class mentioned that I could use the .mov files in Vegas with the Quicktime Pro (paid) version. I may look into that later, but I don't want to spend the $$$ now.

The Quicktime Pro version costs only $29.95

The place I work for has an HM-700 and two HM-750s so I'm quite familiar with the camera.
I can understand them not wanting to set it to AVi but MP4 is also an option (and the one I use all the time) and that will work with a Mac. I can't see them having any objections to setting it to record in that format as it will make life easier for all users.

Thanks Mike,
I'm taking a class at a Public Access station and a lot of the people coming through have never handled a pro cam before. So it's rally a matter of "push these buttons and don't touch ANYTHING ELSE". I can understand and respect that. Still frustrating. It's not as much changing that, but someone going in and changing other stuff they don't know and not changing it back, then the next person who checks it out is messes up. Still...it's frustrating. I've flirted with breaking/bending the rules and just hoping I don't forget to change it back to .mov...but with this fix at least I have a viable option.

Thanks again !
