MOV files

Hi Team.

Q1) How do I play/edit mov files (small video clips with digital camera) in Vegas?

Unrelated to Q1 - Scenerio.........................
I have 4 clips on the timeline -all starting at different times.

I have the 4th clip (or last clip) starting first (t = 5secs) and ends at t= 24 secs.

The first clip starts @ t= 11 secs and also ends at t=24 secs. I place my startign cursor at t= 5secs and play 4th clip - happily watching preview screen in bottom right corner.

At t=11secs, however, the first clip now plays in the preview screen and I don't see the 4th clip in my preview screen any more.

How do I jig it so I see the entire 4th clip without being overlapped by first clip? (I do not wish to move the first clip from t=11secs).

A1) Install QuickTIme. Make sure you do a full install including the Authoring Components.

A2) Alter the laws of physics? You are asking for the impossible. However, here are some possible suggestions ...
- maybe move the 4th clip somewhere else so it doesn't overlap the 1st clip
- split the 4th clip at 11 seconds, move the second part of it after the 1st clip
- speed up the 4th clip so that it plays in 6 seconds instead of taking 19 seconds
- take a break from editing and come back later with a fresh mind so you can think about this clearly

Thanks Chien.

I have installed QT - with Authoring Components.

Sure, I can play MOV files in QT but I want to insert these into Vegas.

Do I need to import mov files into Vegas ?

How do I get Vegas to recognise mov files?

OK Chienworks.

I have progrssed and now able to export to avi in QT7 - thanks.

Now for the refined settings in QT.

What arte the optimal recommended settings when exporting mov to avi file in QT7?

I see "video settings" -
- option to choose type of compression - which one?
- key frame x frames - how many?
- limit data rate to x kB/sec - What rate?
- depth - howmany colours?

What happens when you try to use a .MOV file in Vegas? For me, the same thing happens with MOV that happens with AVI, which is that i can drag the file to the timeline and see the thumbnails and audio waveform.

Sorry, i haven't used quicktime to speak of. I wouldn't know any of the settings for it from a hole in my head.

Thanks CHien.

Vegas woudl not allow me to import or open mov files.

When I exported the mov files into avi format using QT7 - no probs - good key learning there! Much appreciated.

OK, but can you tell me what you see on your screen when you try to use MOV files? What error message does Vegas show?
Bit Of Byte wrote on 6/26/2007, 3:55 AM
sorry - already converted all my mov files. unable to provide you with that error message.

OK. That's too bad. We might have been able to help you get it working right without having to do the conversion.

Yeah, I drag .mov files onto the Vegas timeline every day.
I do not have QuickTime on that machine and will do almost anything to make sure it stays that way.

Everyone's forgetting what Bit said in the original post which was small video clips with .
A lot of AVI files on digital cameras are actually encoded with an MJPEG codec so the odds that this is some strange form of MOV file are quite high.

Thanks RS.

Moving on from whether i can import Mov files into Vegas, can someone please advise the optimal recommended settings when exporting mov to avi file in QT7?

I see "video settings" -
- option to choose type of compression - which one?
- key frame x frames - how many?
- limit data rate to x kB/sec - What rate?
- depth - howmany colours?

Someone has suggested DV, someone else has suggested AVI format.

What to choose please?

That reminds me of those AVI files lots of people here used to get with their Canon Powershot still cameras... had to re-render these "Canon AVI files" in Win. Movie Maker or buy a codec for Vegas to be able to put the resulting AVI files from that re-encoding on the timeline...
