.mov problems in timeline

Hello!

Using Vegas 8.1 64bit pro on one machine ..8.0c on another
Same issue on both.

I have done a search for this and find nothing on this site. It just might be me as i am new.
I find this issue mentioned all over the web but not here.

Recently i have one of my editors sending me files on a dvd of .mov from his FCP and i am not getting any video tracks..i do get a audio track but it is blank and when i push the play button i get nothing. In QT i get a white screen with no audio.
I installed a mpeg2 codec and now it seems to work on my QT but still not on my Vegas8 pro..either machine.

I also just bought a kodak zi8 with HD that saves the files as .mov When i import into vegas 8 i get only video and no audio.
For fun sake i loaded it into Adobe premiere elements $100 software and it worked just fine. I recompressed it in .mov and imported it to Vegas 8 and it works just fine.

Gotta say at this point it is Vegas 8

Any links or codecs anyone can send me to to get this issue fixed...i hate to leave Vegas behind...but i am getting very aggrivated playing with this when i have tons of projects lining up

Thanks,

Mark J. Ryan

For your zi8, change the extension from .mov to .mp4
That will fix it.

For your files from FCP, there is no way to know what is under the hood without some more information.
--Download the freeware MediaInfo.
--Post the information about your files here.
--If possible, upload a short clip in the original format somewhere so we can have a look.

It's codec mania out there for sure. I get files from a Final Cut editor occassionally, and have had the same issue, no video showing.

One thing you can try, in Quciktime Pro, do a Quicktime movie-to-movie export.
I don't know exactly what this does to the file, but when complete, you'll be able to see the video in Vegas Pro.

This issue has something to do with all the different 'wrappers' that can contain say, an .mov file. Just cuz it's .mov doesn't guarantee compatibility on different computers.

Good luck,

Thanks, I'll download your clip and attempt to find out the codec information.
The header info you gave doesn't include it.

Did renaming your zi8 file extension to .mp4 work? You didn't say.

Musicvid

I kind of feel like a dummy here.

I renamed the file extention to a .mp4 and when i imported it...it now says file.mp4.mov.....even though it says .mp4 only on the icon

do i need to do something different to get it to change instead of "rename"?

Thanks,

Mark

Your file extensions are hidden.
There is a very basic tutorial here for renaming .mpg to .vob in Windows here.
Just use the extensions .mov to .mp4 instead.
Scroll down to the YouTube link and follow the directions.
Lots of other helpful information there as well.

About your .mov file from FCP, a quick search of the internet indicates there is no codec that will allow Apple hdv2 files to be edited in Vegas or Premiere.

Fortunately, you can convert those files in Super by eRightSoft to h.264 MP4 files that open fine in Vegas. You are on your own as far as the settings.

Big help thanks!

the hidden file extention change worked perfectly...amazing watching the young man figure this out..gives me hope!

my editor will make me h.264 .mov files

i had him make a h.264 .mp4 and it went from 80 mb .mov to around 8mb .mp4 and couldnt tell much difference..how the heck do they do that?

Thanks again!

Glad you found success with both problems, and also glad you were able to get the second file rendered to a format Vegas understands!

As to your "how the heck did they do that" question, h.264/AVC uses superior compression algorithms and GOP structure to achieve nearly the same quality in a much smaller space than MPEG-2 which is what the Apple hdv2 codec is based on. Until this decade, MPEG-2 was the best we had. If you are really interested in the differences,

H.264 can often perform radically better than MPEG-2 video—typically obtaining the same quality at half of the bit rate or less, especially on high bit rate and high resolution situations.[4]
