"Movie Clip" File Format?

I just rendered my first VMS movie project. I rendered twice, once to MPEG-2 format (with the DVD Architect NTSC video stream template) and once to AC3 format.

Windows 7 Explorer lists the rendered video file as a "Movie Clip" file type instead of an MPEG-2 file.

Are these file types the same thing? If so, why doesn't it list the MPEG-2 file extension that I renderd to? This is a little confusing.

Don't run 7 (yet) but in previous versions of Windows you can set it to not show "common" extensions .. or rather I think that may be the default .. and you can over ride that to show *all* file extensions.

Yes, they're the same.

I have XP but it should be the same....

In Explorer, click on Folder options then File Types tab. Scroll down to MPEG and highlight it. What program is listed for "Opens with:"? That program determines what is listed in the Type column. Mine is WinDVD and "InterVideo Media File" shows in the Type column for MPEG-2 files.

If you're OK with the program listed for Opens with, leave it alone.

"Hide Extensions For Known File Types" was checked under the Folder Options. I unchecked it and now the file extensions appear. However, it still does not list MPEG-2, it just uses an ".mpg" extension.

Why doesn't Windows allow more specific file extensions?

Actually it does. You can rename the file filename.mpeg2 if you wish, and then declare anything ending in .mpeg2 to open in any particular software you choose, thus allowing you to define the type.

In practice, it's not worth the effort. It takes most folks a couple of minutes to recognize what's there and live with it.
