SonyBP wrote on 11/22/2004, 8:00 AM
Notable changes in 4.0a

A bug that prevented some CD drives from extracting audio from CDs has been fixed.

A bug has been fixed that could cause corrupted audio to be created when using the Make Movie Wizard to burn a DVD.

A bug has been fixed that could cause the application to crash if you added Video Output FX and then used the Undo command to remove the effects.

A bug that prevented the Pixelate plug-in from processing video has been fixed.

Download it at this page.

Do I need to uninstall 4.0 and reinstall with 4.0a?

It looks like by the relase notes we should not intall into same directory as existing product - but this does not make sense to me - anyone else know if it can be installed over existing 4.0?

Well, so far, the history of these applications is that they may all be installed over top of previous revisions. I can't imagine any reason why this one should be different.

The release notes say:

"Do not install the application to the same folder as an existing Screenblast Movie Studio or Sonic Foundry VideoFactory installation."

I interpret this to mean that it can be installed over Vegas Movie Studio 4.0, just not earlier versions (MS 3.x or earlier) but I haven't tried it yet.

It's a little deceiving because it wants to install a new setup up folder (4.0a) in the programs folders, but thats all it is, a setup folder. Once you go through the install it recognizes the previous version and runs a update install instead of the full version so you will not have the two programs installed, 4.0 and 4.0a.

I installed the update over 4.0 then when I tried to view a project I was working on nothing displayed in the preview window.
Anyone else have this problem?
I used System Restore to get back to the 4.0 program and it played fine so something seems to be wrong.

That is correct, you can install 4.0a overtop of Vegas Movie Studio 4.0 without a problem. Just do not install it to the same folder as 2.0 or 3.0.

I don't know if it's related to 4.0a or build 48, as I upgraded straight from 3.0a to 4.0a 48, but there are issues with audio generation that I have never seen and I've been using these products since Video Factory 2.0c. I think the surefire way to make sure you get audio in the audio file is to make sure the entire timeline is displayed before rendering but I haven't confirmed that. All I know is I've had too many problems with generating audio with this release/build.

After upgrading I noticed that the playback window became very choppy. Just dragging a simple video clip and playing it is choppy. No effects, not text, only 1 layer.

Two days ago, I spent 3 hours rendering some video to hard disk (WMV file). I tried playing it back, but no audio played. Back in Movie Studio, I pressed "Play" and the video played back in the preview window, but there was no audio (audio meters didn't move).

I loaded the WMV file into Movie Studio and there WAS an audio track - just no audio in it.

I rebooted my machine and haven't been able to recreate the problem since (using the exact same Project) ...

I thought it was probably my fault somehow, but after reading the above posts, now I'm not too sure ... may Movie Studio has a bug somewhere here ...

I downloaded 4.0 but can't open it. The registration number on Screenblast Movie Studio 3.0 won't work on it. I didn't download from within MS 3.0 because of the warnings in this forum thread. How do I get around this problem?
hbwerner wrote on 2/1/2005, 3:25 AM
Please see my other note - now, in addition to not being able to open MS 4, if I save a file on MS 3, it trys to re-open on MS 4, which I can't get to. HELP.

There's an upgrade fee to go from MS 3 to 4 - the old serial number wont work.

It sounds like MS 4 has taken over the file associations. Assuming you're not going to upgrade yet I'd start by uninstalling v4 and, if that doesn't work on its own, reinstalling v3.

As a general point, if a file's opening in the wrong app, you can right click on it and select the one you'd like to use via "Open with".

I'm willing to pay the upgrade fee if it's worth while. From what I've read, there seems to be only marginal benefits. Anyone please as punch with the upgrade? And how do I pay the fee? The download site didn't say anythingl.

If you don't want to make DVDs or you're happy with your current authoring program I don't see any reason to upgrade. If you want a new authoring program DVDAS is included as part of the upgrade and is well worth the upgrade price. Here's the link
