Movie Studio 8.0b video issue

Hi!
I want to import video clips that I have saved on my computer so I go into the Explore tab and click thru the folders until I find the clip that I want and when I click it...all I get is the audio track.
I'm on Vista Home Edition. The clip plays find in my Windows Media Player. So I'm not sure how to fix it, or if that can be fixed! I just bought the program today and had no problems with installation and I registered it right away. Please help! I tried searching up a solution but could find none.
Thanks!

Also, just thot I should add that I have the trial of version 9 on my laptop and that will import the clips that I have with no problems.
If anything I'll just return the one I bought to the store where I got it and purchase the download of 9 from here. but a fix would be appreciated.

Any other info? What type of clip is it?

Am I correct ... You can successfully load the clip in your laptop, but not your desktop?

Are they both running the same version of VMS and the exact same operating system?

Also, yes, we need to know the type of clip. Where did it come from and what is the extention (.mpg, or .avi, or whatever)

This is a codec issue. Your desktop doesn't have the right codec installed. It should come with the camera software.

Mark...it's an avi , each clip is not more than 100MB each. I ripped to to my laptop w/ Magic DVD Ripper. I want to make an AMV w/ it for a convention. I tried to re-rip it using Vegas and it kept saying there was an error and it couldn't complete. It would only rip in mpeg...(which I thot was wierd).

I hope that's enough info. Anything else just let me know, I'll try to give you all the info I can to get this fixed!

Brighterside, no sorry that was a little confusing...I am only running it on my laptop. Vista home edition. But I do have version 9 trial on here as well and have no problems with the clips.

And Ivan, thank you for the input but no camera was used for my part. I ripped the clips to my computer from an anime, I want to make an amv for a convention I am going to later in 2009 All the same I could still see it possibly being a codec issue...

Vegas doesn't work well with ripped files from commercial dvds. It is a copyright protection thingy. Similar posts have been on this forum so often. Even if you get to play it, you'll have issues with non-synchronised audio.
I'm a teacher myself and I use movie extracts quite often in my classes. I always use the original dvd for two reasons: no technical hassles, and a good example for my students: use no illegal copy.

the thing is i have version 9.0b trial downloaded and i have no problems with that one. which is why i'm wondering why i'm having issues w/ 8.0b. and i have a friend that uses vegas the same way and hasn't had any problems far as i know. thank you for the help tho.

Not all codecs are created equal. The DV codec is always a good bet. Also MJPEG AVI. Divx or Xvid AVI (which you've probably got)—not so much. Sometimes Vegas will work for a while (with all Xvid codecs installed, and everything), and then suddenly it won't recognize the files. Some people never have problems with these codecs within Vegas, other people notice crashing and all sorts of instability. I personally don't even want to mess with it, and have decided to stick with DV or MJPEG or something like that.
