When editing mp4 files in vms I will get the following error:
Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0
Version 9.0b (Build 92)
Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) READ:0x4391000 IP:0x629FCCDA
In Module 'QuickTime.qts' at Address 0x628E0000 + 0x11CCDA
Thread: GUI ID=0x11C Stack=0x12A000-0x130000

I am using the QuickTime 7.6.0 version as stated in some other posts. I am not able to just rename the extension as the audio and video tracks will remain out of sync. I have been using the software that came with the cam (ArcSoft MediaImpression for Kodak) to convert the files to mp4.

The crash will happen at different times while editing the project. Sometimes it will happen when I add a file to the project or other times when rendering the project.

I do understand this has to do with QuickTime as I am able to edit and render video from my sony cam which is in AVI format.

Should I try using QuickTime Pro? I am not all that concerned about keeping the exact quality the cam shoots. I want to render this to a DVD or just upload to the web (youtube or other video sites).

Your Quicktime version should be stable.

The sync issue has been reported, and there is a workaround. After renaming the file extension from .mov to .mp4 and importing the media:
1) Go to Options and Select "Ignore Event Grouping."

Are you saying the .mp4 files from Arcsoft are causing the crash? Not terribly surprised, and if you "must" convert your files, suggest you use something else. It's always best to stick with the original files if you can.

Sony is working on the issue and it's already been fixed in Vegas Pro 9c, so there should be an update for your VMS in the near future.

Yeah, I know it's kind of a pain right now. But since it's been fixed in the Pro version, a fix for you can't be far behind.
