There is no upgrade path because MS-HD has the fewest features (even less the VMS).

Yeah, Movie Studio HD appears to be about the same as regular Vegas Movie Studio without any DVD burning capability but with support for HDV and AVCHD hi-def cameras. It's apparently targeted to people who want to edit video just for posting on the web, etc.

The upgrade from VMS would still be to VMS Platinum.

The outright purchase cost of VMS HD is probably less than an upgrade would cost anyway.

Yea, I guess that makes sense. It would be nice it if was included in the VMS. But it does do an excellent job at what it does. I loaded my VMS project into VMS HD and everything worked. I did not notice the lack of dvd support since I don't use it. Guess I will just buy it. Since I don't use the other features, I may not need to upgrade VMS/
