Movie Studio Platinum 16 Crashes When I Click on Transitions

Welmis wrote on 3/27/2019, 12:01 AM

Build 109. When I open any project (including the demo one) and click on the Transitions link, the application crashes right away. This happens consistently. Would anyone happen to have a similar problem and how was it resolved? I still have Movie Studio Platinum 15 installed, and it works just fine.

I haven't experienced the problem but then I don't have any third party Transitions installed. Possibly they are your problem. Try uninstalling any that you have, such as New Blue, that either came with VMS16 or earlier versions. Then if VMS16 behaves itself try reinstalling the transition packages one by one until you find the one that causes your problem.

But before you try the above go to Options\Preferences\Video and switch off "GPU acceleration of video processing" to see if that makes any difference.

I have the exact same problem. I uninstalled the product, downloaded and installed it again. Opened it with no media, no project. Clicked "Transitions" and it crashed.

1. GPU acceleration was originally set to Off.

2. I uninstalled the NewBlueFX software and VMS16 became fully operational, no crashes when I clicked on the Transitions link, so you were absolutely right, that was the culprit.

3. Re-installation of NewBlueFX lead back to the original issue.

4. I opened a ticket with MAGIX to no avail.

5. I opened a ticket with NewBlueFX, but no reaction so far.

Given that the transitions available in VMS itself are sufficient for me, I just uninstalled NewBlueFX to be able to move on.

Thank you for your help.

I uninstalled the NewBlue software and tried with no success. I wonder what I missed?

I just received a reply from Magix support. They've asked for a msinfo report from my system, which I provided. We'll see what they say and I'll report back.

I just check, and no problem here. I'm on win7

Did you turn "GPU acceleration of video processing" off?

@Welmis Glad you solved it but could you please clarify which "NewBlueFX" you are referring to. Did it come with VMS16Plat or VMS16Suite, or an earlier VMS?

Magix came back with some info that it appears it's failing to load audio plugins. They asked what audio plugins I was loading. I answered, but also experimented. I renamed the directory holding all the plugins, then started Movie Studio. I check and no plugins were loaded. I then clicked Transitions and watched the application crash.

@Alan-Anderson Do you have any third party (such as NewBlue) transitions installed?

I do have NewBlue Titler Pro 7 Express, Supreme Package and Color Fixer Pro. I tried uninstalling them from the computer, then running VMS and clicking on Transitions. Same problem - the app crashes. It's possible they weren't completely removed, but ??? I tried since this worked for Welmis but it didn't work for me. I also made sure to turn off HW acceleration.

I was referring to NewBlue Transitions 5 Ultimate, which was part of the VMS 16 Platinum installation package.

I have finally been able to get NewBlue Transitions 5 Ultimate work with VMS 16 Platinum. What seems to have done the trick is uninstalling the NewBlue Transitions 5 Ultimate package, cleaning up the Registry (I actually used the MAGIX PC Tuning application for that) and re-installing the Transitions after that.

I got a very informative response from the NewBlue Support (unlike Vegas Support, which was nothing short of a joke).

To close the loop on the issue, here are the steps they recommended. I did a similar thing by running the utility to clean the orphan records from the registry, but the net effect was the same.

1. Uninstall Transitions

2. Go to C:\Program Files and delete NewBlue

3. Run Regedit

4. Look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE, right click NewBlue and select "Delete".

5. Look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE, right click NewBlue and select "Delete"

6. Re-install Transitions.
