Well, Quicktime is essential for editing some video formats. What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?

You also should make sure you have the 64-bit version of Quicktime if you're on a 64-bit operating system.

Though occasionally Apple drops an ugly Quicktime update too. So some people have to download an earlier version.

I'm running the latest Quicktime on both my Windows 7 and Windows 8 machine and Movie Studio 12 runs great edting both DV and AVCHD for me.

Several people have reported issues with 7.7.4.
Try rolling back to 7.7.1.

You didn't say what was in your files.
MediaInfo is free at Sourceforge.

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. There is still no 64 bit version of QT at this time. 32 bit QT runs on 64 bit OS. There is a 64 bit installer fir iTunes, however . . .

Thanks for all that. I am editing AVCHD from a sony HDR SR12E with Win 7 34 bit. For this I don't need Quicktime. However I have some footage from another camera which does. It used to be OK but went wrong a couple of months ago. Maybe I should try an older version of Quicktime - where would I get this?

But its pretty poor that this is necessary.

Yes, it's pretty common knowledge that Apple breaks compatibility with Windows NLEs whenever they can. But you won't get anywhere complaining to them, it's been tried.
