Moving between db levels

I'm new to this so please excuse the question...
I have a background track which for 10secs I want to move from Gain of 0.0db to -9.1db so that the original video soundtrack plays over the top. If I split the audio into 3 parts and move the gain of the middle 10 second part to -9.1db the transition from 0.0 to -9.1 is immediate, but I wanted to make the transiton smoother. I looked at using fade offset but this only seems to only allow me to go from 0.0db to silent. Can this offset be modified or is there another way? Thanks.

Sure. The way you're doing it is relatively clunky; the best way is to use volume envelopes. Hit V on a track to bring these up. If you're using Vegas 5 onwards this gets even better as you can record and playback fader automation, tied to these volume envelopes.

I'd recommend you look these things up in Help for full details, but hopefully that gets you started.
