Usually instead of punching in, I'll work with a few tracks
to get a complete "take" for a certain instrument. So now,
as I go along, I want to move these events into a single
track and work with the crossfades, etc.
How do I do this and stay in the exact timing from track to
track?
You can use the snapping feature which will hold that position of an
event when you drag vertically. Or you could "add as takes" by right-
click dragging each track onto your "master track" and then cut from
each take that way...
I can't remember if it's like this in 1.0b, but 2.0 beta allows you
to toggle between takes with the "t" key. Handy.
good luck.

If I understand you right, you want to make a composite of various
takes. I only had the Vegas demo for a short time, so I'm not sure
about this, but check if you can vertically constrain audio regions
when dragging them to a new track, by holding the Ctrl key while
dragging. That's how you move events to new tracks, maintaining their
original time, in Pro Tools. Every serious audio editing program
should have some version of this.
