Moving Markers with Media

I have a 1 hour awards ceremony that Had graphics and timed audio introducing 180 different winning entries. I now need to put something at the front of it. Unfortunately I started the project at the beginning of the timeline. I am now trying to "Insert Time" at the front of the project but I can't get my 180 markers to move with the media. I used the ripple editor, I have it set for "All Tracks Markers and Regions" But the markers still don't move. I "selected all" an no move.

Any suggestions?

Al

What you are doing should work (I have done it exactly the same way myself). Do you have events locked? If so, they won't move.

The events move fine. The markers don't move with them....which is what I want... :(

Sony, I hope you read this and take note.

OK, I went back to Vegas and had to figure this out. It is a problem with the Vegas selection metaphor. So many problems in Vegas are casued by the confusion of whether you
  1. Have an event selected;
2. Have a timeline seclected;
3. Have a track selected.
You have dozens of permutations of these various things, and while some things operate exactly as you'd expect, others require precisely the right combination of selections to make them work.

You happened to hit on one that requires the precise combination of selections.

To do what you want to do, follow this sequence:

1. Make sure NO events are selected. To deselect all events, click on the blank area below the last track (there may be better ways to do this, but this is the only one I know). This is the key to getting things to work. (The only mention in the manual says the same thing).

2. Place the cursor at the beginning of the timeline (or wherever you want to insert the time).

3. Make sure that the track ripple is enabled and set to "All Tracks, Markers, and Regions."

4. Use the Time option in the Insert menu to add the time.

By deselecting all events, all markers to the right of the inserted time will move. However, if you have even one event selected, the markers don't move.

When I used to be involved in software deisgn, the developers used to talke about the "surprise factor." They wanted to design the software so that users weren't "surprised" by something that happened in a manner different than what they expected. The interaction between the three selection methods leads to way too many surprises, and should be modified.

Hope this helps (and I hope that Sony read this and takes action).

You're welcome. I just got off the phone with someone whose computer I reconfigured so Outlook Express would use the high security settings. Today, he was targeted by an identity theft ring, and even though he fell for the scan and clicked on the email link, nothing happened. Feels good to help people.

Sounds like a great project you're working on. Hope it turns out well.
