moving media on various tracks

I am not certain that the technical description of my problem is politically correct but I have problem moving video and audio segments on the various tracks without disturbing that which is on other tracks. For example, when I add background music to an audio track it causes the video on the video track to slip. I can bring things back into place but I am confident there is a simple thing I am missing which would allow me to insert and remove segments without disturbance to the other tracks. I have moved over the Vegas 10 from Cinestream and am finding it very capable but have not been able to find a good source for instructions on such things as I just mentioned, or things like how to work with key frames to make lively titles. I have the manual for Vegas 6 but it does not cover many of my questions. Is there a source for a hard copy manual for Vegas 10? Thank you.

Hello and Welcome.

You can download the manual in PDF format here:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/manuals

But you are correct in saying that the help and also the manual doesn't offer the detail that you REALLY need. But it's better than nothing!

On your problem, it sounds as if you may have the Auto Ripple feature turned on. Auto Ripple is great for inserting video or audio and having everything behind the inserted clip slide to the right. Otherwise you would have to manually move each clip and reposition your transitions, music, blah blah blah.

But Auto Ripple can be a surprise if you are not expecting it or do not want it at a particular time. Sometimes I turn it off, but most of the time I leave it on because I want to add video clips to the timeline and have everything slide to the right.

From your main menu, you can find Auto Ripple by choosing Options/Auto Ripple. It toggles off and on. There is a keyboard shortcut to access it this as well (CRTL+L). You can see your shortcuts on the main menu.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't, be sure to post back and someone may be able to help.

Regards,

Kimberly

Kimberly, Thanks for the help. I am slowly getting into this and will probably never use more than about 10 to 15 percent of the features. All I want is just an assembled story line from video and pictures, with a narrative, background music,, transitions and a few titles. That will take care of what I am doing just for family consumption. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you as well!

Don't forget the tutorials on VMS:

After you've had VMS for awhile you will be amazed at the stuff you can do.
