Moving to win2000 pro

Bruthish wrote on 9/15/2003, 9:43 PM
I have been running WIN98SE for some time now and by reading other's posts...I have found that I am limiting myself. I have purchased 2000 professional and I would like to know what I am going to gain from it verses 98SE. I kow I am about to overcome the gig limit on capturing....anything else? and will I see performance improvements?
Thanks

The two biggest changes you should get is large file sizes using NTFS and better stability. I think you will be GLAD you switched.

Not sure of your plans, but IMO it's better to do a fresh install of WIN2K than an upgrade from WIN98SE. Also get Service Pack 2 for WIN2K, if you don't already have it. Definately do the NTFS thing.

i'll chime in and agree with the above posts. haven't had a bsod since i installed it and my system actually feels like it runs faster, this may just be because i want to feel that it runs faster after talking myself into win2k but hey.

Win2k is a great OS, I prefer it to WinXP. By the way, they're up to Service Pack 4 for Win2k, it was released around the beginning of July. Also, definitely format all your data drives as NTFS.

Win2k is up to SP-4 at present plus a whole bunch of critical updates.

You will be very happy. I switched to 2K a year and a half ago. Apps including Vegas, VF, etc. all run much smoother and I haven't had a crash since the switch.

Of course, the biggest advantage is the huge file size allowed by NTFS ~TB (terabytes, >1000GB). No more broken up files for long videos.

I haven't gone any higher than Service Pack 2. Actually I'm afraid to install the later ones because W2K Pro w/ SP2 is the most stable setup I have ever had. I'm dissapointed to see so many major softwares dropping W2K support. I was hoping to keep using it forever.
