MP4 files from GOPRO HD too large?

Grantman wrote on 5/24/2011, 3:50 AM
I generally edit my GOPRO HD MP4 files fine with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9c. However I just found the frustrating problem of Sony Vegas not being able to import MP4 files larger than around 2.4GB. An error appears "Warning: an error occured when opening one or more files. The reason for the error could not be determined."

If anyone could state a fix for this I'd appreciate it.

I've already browsed around those nasty video splitter trial softwares and had zero satisfaction. Also concerned of quality loss.

Are you by any chance storing that video on a drive other than your C drive?

If you're keeping your video on a second or external drive, ensure that this drive is formatted NTFS. Most drives come from the factory formatted FAT32, which has a file size limit that often chokes video work.

This is a known bug. Download the trial of Platinum 10 and see if the problem persists.

The file is on my main drive which is NTFS formatted.

Will try some trial versions of other software as suggested.

Well Sony Vegas Pro 10 opens the same files fine.

Needless to say I'm bitterly disappointed because I didn't buy Vegas Movie Studio 9 with the knowledge I could not edit these larger files. Feeling cheated.

I'm a moderately active youtuber - a modest 516 subscribers but with over 1,030,000 upload views. I want the video editing software I bought to do the job it purportes.

Older software means fewer features, this is normal. If you just bought this software, then you should have bought Platinum 10 instead, which is out for MORE than a year. I mean, it's not normal to buy older versions of software.

Uh... yeah...

I bought Sony Vegas HD Movie Studio 9 recently from the Sony website as part of their currently offered range. It is the most value orientated software they offer for HD editing. It costs $45 USD vs $599.94 of Vegas Pro 10.

My software supports .MP4 editing as a feature. Producing an error for mildly large .MP4 files was not part of the deal.

Do you understand?

It's not $45 vs $600. Platinum 10 costs just $69 on various online retailers (e.g. on Amazon), and it's the updated version of the version you bought. Most importantly, it's version 10 that has all the MP4 and h.264 optimizations compared to the old versions (which is the format you're interested in). Platinum 9 or earlier choke too easily on these kinds of files (as did video editors from other manufacturers back then too).

>My software supports .MP4 editing as a feature.

It supports it badly.

>Producing an error for mildly large .MP4 files was not part of the deal.

This is NOT the only problem you will have with MP4 files on Platinum 9. h.264 files (either inside MP4 or MOV) *crash* too easily on Platinum 9 or earlier. The large file problem is the least of my worries.

What do you think?

My suggestion: update to v10, or wait for a possible version 11. Definitely upgrade though if you want an ease of mind. And always buy the latest. In this case, it wasn't $45 vs $600. It was $45 vs $70.
