MP4 not loading in Vegas

HitVic wrote on 3/8/2011, 4:56 PM
I tried over and over to try to get an MP4 download from youtube to
open in Vegas. All I get is a black screen with audio working. I got
a help from Vegad that if I change the file extension toMP4 it should open as long as I have Quicktime-i tunes installed. The videodoes playback on Quicktime, but does not enter Vegas. Help! Is it a codec issue and if so how do I know which works

What version of Vegas?
What version of Quicktime?
By what means is the video being downloaded from Youtube?
It should be mp4 to begin with, unless you are using something that is transcoding.

Vegas 8.0 and Quicktime 7. There is a downloader panel on youtube that has quality options. I downloaded the video at 720p as an MP4.

You need to be a bit more specific on the version numbers, especially with regard to Quicktime. For example: Vegas 8.0c and Quicktime 7.6.2.

Unfortunately, there's been quite a storied history of new versions of one or the other resulting in loss of video or audio in mov or mp4 files from a previously working setup. It's a real pain in the pants. The last time I had the problem, I had to drop back to a previous version of Quicktime in order to get things working again.

If you search the forum, you'll find other threads that address this very subject. There may be something about it in a Knowledge Base FAQ. It would be nice to see a forum 'sticky' on the subject, because if comes up fairly often.

Vegas 8.0 could not open YouTube mp4 files. 10.0 can.

Download Avidemux and remux the file and then it will open in 8.0. Choose Video: Copy. Audio: Copy. Format: MP4.

Please let us know if it works. Good luck!

It is 8.0c (build 260) and Quicktime 7.6.2. Do you remember what version of Quicktime you downloaded?

I downloaded Avidemux and loaded the video. I got a meesage that said if the video is using B frames, the video may crash or stutter.
It does stutter when I play. It also said the it could move to another mode but it could lose frame accuracy. It did.
There are 2 MP4 extensions, MP4 and MP4 (PSP). Dont know what that means. Which one should I use?

Your version of Vegas and Quicktime should work after using Avidemux. I have the same versions.

Bypass all the warnings in Avidemux. You should be fine.
{Edit] You want to do a straight remux. Copy, Copy, MP4.
