mp4 - windows doesn't recognise

Hi,

I just started playing with the new mp4 codec in Vegas6d and I am impressed with the small file size compared to Windows v9 and the quality seeems okay with the lower bit rate.
However when I play the file with windows it comes up with the old 'do not recognise this codec, do you want to play it anyway' and when I click yes it proceeds to play OK.
Why would Sony use an mp4 that is not instantly recognised by the windows 10 player. Or am I missing something here??
I also notice that the realplayer version I have only plays it as a sound file, Power DVD only plays it as a video file (due to the form of the sound file no doubt), Nero Showtime plays it okay and the quicktime version I have won't even open it.

thanks
Genie

You need the latest version of quicktime to open MP4.
WM won't open it in it's current version. It's not a Sony thing, it's that Windows has their own VC1, which they're trying to gain greater acceptance of.

I just tried the latest real player and quicktime players. Real player only plays the sound and quicktime plays it in a very broken way.

Interesting comment about windows having their own VC1.

I am planning to use HD video files on my website so I'm trying to figure out whether to go with windows v9, mpeg4 or even flash 8. Has anybody else had a learning vureve with these formats?

thanks genie
