mpeg-1 quality

I've encoded an mpeg-1 NTSC Video CD file from the
timeline. The source was a Canon GL-1 DV camcorder through
a SIIG 1394 card. Timeline quality looks great, .avi's
look great, but the mpeg-1 file is so badly pixelated it
looks terrible. The video CD I created (Smart and Friendly
CD-RW disk/Nero 5)looks horrible through a stand-alone Sony
DVD (DVP-S550D)player. Is this just the Ligos encoder?
I'm currently running a 320 X 240 .avi of the same source
video through Terran's Media Cleaner 5 (mpeg-1 default
settings). So far, it looks great (it's taking forever to
encode on an Athlon 700)! What's up with the ligos mpeg-1
stuff?

You'll need to experiment with the quality settings in the
MPEG plug-in's custom settings- lots of room for adjustment.

Hi David!

I think you'll find a lot of folks feel there's no
comparison between Cleaner 5 & near everything else. Then
again for the price... At any rate, I believe Cleaner does
a pass or two figuring out how to best optimize the file,
then goes back and does it, so it does take longer. I've
also read that it's a bit slower then 4 on some codecs.

For what it's worth, you might find the panasonic
compresser takes a bit longer then ligos, but seems to
deliver a somewhat better result. You also might want to
check out the TMPEGEnc encoder, though it's not nearly as
user friendly, & has a few quirks.

good luck
mike
