MPEG-2 Compatibility

I am having some seriously strange issues with the Ligos
MPEG-2 format. When I save to this format, I am unable to
get it to work properly under Windows 2000 using Windows
Media Player Version 7.0. I have been able to get it to
work under version 6.4.09.1109 but I am experiencing some
lag.

The strange thing is that I get a different error message
on every machine I try. Some are unable to get the CODEC,
some say invalid file type. Others tell me that the CODEC
is not compatible.

The fact is that I have been able to get the same versions
of the Media Player to work on my machines at home. One is
a Windows ME PIII 750 and the other is Win98 SE Sony
Laptop.

So... (I beleive)the question is, are there any documented
issues with Windows 2000? Is there an MPEG Plug-in that I
can download for use on all machines.

I want to distribute the videos in MPEG format as the size
and quality meet my needs. However, they must be compatible
with 2000.

Thanks for the help.

I ran into the same problems. The issue is that your home
systems have the Ligos codec installed and the other
systems you are using for playback do not. When you are
running WMP7, click on properties and you will see the
video and audio codec used; it will show the Ligos codec.
My gripe is that Ligos claims MPEG compatibility but no
other MPEG codec can decode a file encoded with their codec.

Hope this helps understand the issue. I don't know about a
plug in or a way to distribute the codec with your file.

Windows 2000 is not the issue. Whether W2K or 98 or ME,
media player picks up the installed codecs but does not
include mpeg2 as a native codec. It works on the machine
you composed them on because there is an mpeg2 codec on
that machine.

Too bad that the ligos codec is not distributable (hint,
hint)...
