MPEG-2 Low On Memory

This is actually my solution as opposed to a question.

I was having trouble rendering an HD project. Some of the field clips were MXF. Some were uncompressed HD. I was trying to render to the 8mbps Windows Media Video HD format and it kept stopping at 8%. The error message was that I was too low on memory.

For this project I was using a 32 bit system running windows XP. It's a quad core system that came with 8 gb of RAM.

I tried the various adjustments to RAM preview recommended in the forum to no avail. Same issue.

The troublesome clip contained two SFX. For about 60 frames the video was accelerated to 300%. Also added was motion blur.

For me the best solution was to take that clip and render that SFX separately as an AVI, remove the clip with the effects and put the new, rendered clip in its place. After that the rendering continued without an issue.

For what it's worth, even though that system has 8 GB of RAM, it is only using a maximum of about 3.125 GB due to the fact that you're using 32-bit XP. The only way to use all of that RAM is to upgrade to a 64-bit OS, like Win7-64.

Thanks John.

I actually knew that.

I have another system running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with 12 gig. I edit most of my hd projects on that system. The particular project I was trying to render was only 2 minutes long.

There seems to be a relationship between using multiple FX and the issue, especially if one of the FX is motion blur.

CPU load while rendering the project was pretty high for that computer, about 85%.

Typically, I use that machine for my SD projects, but I've got a longer HD project in process on the 64 bit machine. I thought I could sneak it by.

Thanks again for your input.
