MPEG-2 not available to other apps?

Hi all,

I'm relatively new to this, and I'm trying to get a pretty good image at a tidy size. :)

I want to capture (analog video) to MPEG-2 or DivX 5 rather than the huge uncompressed files. I understand VF doesn't support DivX (it just shows black video). But I did buy the VF MPEG-2 codec, which works fine for output only.

But can I capture to MPEG-2 in another app? I would like to capture using VirtualDub because I like it, but that nice MPEG-2 codec I bought from SonicFoundry doesn't appear in my multimedia list of available codecs!

I've tried using DivX 4 (the hack), MS Video MPEG (not the locked on; #2, I think), Indeo 5, and Huffy 2 side by side. Huffy renders wrong, Indeo 5 is too big & drops many frames. The other two look okay, but none have the nice look of DivX 5 or VF's MPEG-2.

Any suggestions on how to get VF's MPEG-2 to show up in other apps, or force VF to import DivX 5?

Thanks,
Dennis
