JimClark wrote on 8/5/2002, 10:29 PM
I just added the Mpeg-2 plugin to my Video Factory 2.0 and rendered a file to my hard disk. I player the file and its square and I look in the menu's and it says 480X480 and there is no other choice and the movie looke wierd with a square picture. Do you have to buy something else to get other choices? I am trying to make a SVCD.
thanks

If you make a SVCD and play it on a DVD player it won't look square anymore. The reason it is 480x480, that's what the specification calls for.

Jimclark;

I have been told that the reason 480X480 works is that the "pixels" on a TV screen are effectively rectangular. I suppose it has something to do with the way the scan works.

480x480 gives good results on a 4:3 aspect ratio TV, but if the plugin will only allow one aspect ratio, does that mean owners of widescreen TVs need the pro version of the plugin?

I tried to import a video file with a VOB extension when Video Factory connected me to their online store and had me buy the plug-in for $29.99. Tried both automated & manual install. Activation code did not work with manual install. Has anyone had this problem or have a suggestion on the VOB issue which is a typical DVD file format?

Was reading your post - "If you make a SVCD and play it on a DVD player it won't look square anymore. The reason it is 480x480, that's what the specification calls
for. " and had a question - -

if I purchase the MPEG2 plugin, you're saying I can make an SVCD, burn it to my regular CDRW and play that cd on a DVD player? I was under the impression I had to have a DVD burner to be able to play it on a DVD player. (very new to this but interested in learning) TIA

Marys, VCD and SVCD are formats that are designed to be DVD compatible, but written to a standard CD-R instead of a DVD, so their whole purpose is to be played on a DVD player. Because much less data can be written to a CD, they will be somewhat limited for length and quality of the video. Beware that many older players (and probably a few new ones) can't play them.

The Pioneer DV-444 and Daewoo 5700 work well for vcd's / SVCD's the_ripper

Ripper - what do you mean, as far as playing them? Will they play in my Sony DVD player? Also, does anyone have a URL for a freeware MPEG burning software tool? I was using Easy CD Creater5 but now that I want to burn my MPEG movie, Easy CD Creater5 doesn't come with it automatically. Looking for a possible freeware version...TIA

Sony DVD players aren't the most tolerant when it comes to playing home made VCDs. Some will read CR-Rs but not CD-RWs, others are the opposite way round and some wont read either! Have a look at the compatibility guide at http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php.
