MPEG-2 Problem

Stan_Arthur wrote on 1/3/2001, 2:50 PM
I'm a very enthusiastic Video Factory user. It has been an
incredible learning experience through trial and error as
to getting the best end results. I was very excited to use
the new MPEG-2 plug-in. My first test gave me incredible
results in picture quality. But I soon discovered that
there is a major problem that doesn't appear to be an issue
with any other rendering format option. When I play back
the MPEG-2 files in WMP7 (my only MPEG-2 playback option at
this point), the audio lags behind the video at least a
full second. Nothing I've tried in the custom configuration
has solved this problem. Can you help?

Operating System: Win98
DirectX version: Current Release
Hard drive type (SCSI/IDE): IDE 20 gig @ 7500rpm - 384 meg
ram
Computer: Compaq PIII - 700mhz
Capture card: Matrox Marvel G-200
Camera: Analog

MP7 does not natively support MPEG2 (its using the mpeg
codecs installed with VideoFactory)- you'd be better off
using MPEG1 if MP7 is your destination player.

It's also possible that you need to look into tweaking the
Matox card settings- there's lots of configurations
possible that can improve- or degrade- performance of other
applications. Start with turning bus mastering "off"...

I found a solution by accident, but I cannot explain why it
works. I wanted to move the audio track ahead on the time
line in order to compensate for the delay I was
experiencing, just as an experiment. I discovered that in
order to move the audio seperately from the video track, I
had to "ungroup" them from each other. I later discovered
that the simple act of ungrouping the audio from the video
fixed the problem I was having in rendering to MPEG-2. The
audio is now in perfect sync with the video when playing on
WMP7. It would seem that the problem is not with WMP7. How
bizarre! Thanks for your input, Dave!

GRRRRRR!

My last post was premature. Turns out that it IS a WMP7
issue. The video plays fine when WMP7 is not in full-screen
mode. I don't experience the audio time delay until I
switch it to full-screen. ARRGH! I'm guessing the solution
then is to have a player that is native to MPEG-2. Can you
recommend one? Will the Xing player do MPEG-2 or only
standard MPEG? I haven't found any reference to MPEG-2 on
their web site yet... still looking.

Windows MediaPlayer 7 works fine for mpeg 2 once the mpeg
plug-in is installed.

There are many "Software DVD" players available that will
play MPEG files fullscreen very nicely. Most new video
cards come with Cinemaster or something similar.
