I think it's safe to say that you don't need to tell us that you're using VMS 8 any longer. I think we all know that by now. ;)

Anyway, to answer your question.... Yes MPEG 4 can be imported. File > Import > Media. By default All Media Files is chosen as the File type, but you can specify "Main Concept AVC/AAC (*.mp4)". Since you can import it, editing is implied. You can also render (Make Movie) a mp4 file but you have to click on the Advanced Render button.

I've never used mp4 files in VMS so I'm not sure if there is a limitation to how the mp4 files were created to determine whether or not VMS can import them.

This is not accurate.

Mpeg4 has many incarnations. There is MPEG4-SP (e.g. that's footage that comes out of cellphones and the new Kodak HD 720p digicams) which is supported via Quicktime and so it requires the latest Quicktime to be installed, there is MPEG4-ASP (all the pirated stuff) which requires the DivX/XViD codec to be installed and it does NOT play well with Vegas, and there is the various MPEG4-AVC versions that are supported via Vegas' Main Concept codec.

So depending which kind it is, you will get or not, fast or slow, support. Generally, only try to edit DV/Cineform AVI or mpeg2 with Vegas, it's the codecs it likes the most. Everything else is either problematic or slow.

For best mpeg4-SP and AVC support (not ASP) get a Mac, as Mac editors are re-encoding on the fly during importing to a more familiar codec. You can do something similar with the PC, for example get your XViD AVI mpeg4-asp file and use a third party tool to convert to DV AVI or mpeg2 or AVI Cineform.

This is not accurate.

I guess you didn't read my last sentence...

"I've never used mp4 files in VMS so I'm not sure if there is a limitation to how the mp4 files were created to determine whether or not VMS can import them."

A more accurate lead in would have been: "That's partly true, but..."

(s)he asked a general question so I gave a general reply. You and I know that a new thread will be started when a more specific question is asked.
