MPEG encoding dilema

I have some prerendered AVIs I wish to put on the same timeline. Final formats are VCD (MPEG-1) and DVD (MPEG-2).
What is the best procedure to encode, a piece at a time and then use an authoring software to produce the sequence. Or is it better to timeline them and encode the whole. Will I encounter A/V sync issues in such a long stream (the movie accumulates to 50 mintes)

You'll probably be better off (and finish faster) if you assemble all the clips on the timeline and render as one piece. The only sync problems i've noticed with MPEG are due to the player, not the rendering process.

Thanks. I need it fast - 50 minutes project is due in 23 hours.

Edit the sequence using .avi source material, save the project.

Start rendering to MPEG-1.

Open another copy of Vegas (you can run multiple instances of Vegas at once) with the same project, render to MPEG-2.

Take a break for a few hours - it may take awhile to render both files, but at least it is happening in parallel with no user intervantion.
