mpeg vs avi on net renderer

I found I was trying to render mpeg doing a distributed render. But I thought the conversion would happen automatically so the renderers would render avi and then the server would stitch them into an mpeg. I see on the dialog a checkbox but it is grayed out and says it will use avi as the intermediate format. Can someone tell me how I am supposed to render to mpeg with the distributed network rendering?

I think there are issues with using the Mpeg license on multiple machines, so you would have to pay for multiple licenses to do it, so MPEG rendering can only take place on the machine that has the full Vegas install. There is some kind of workaround I think.
