MPEG2 plugin - any good?

the_harper wrote on 4/17/2002, 10:53 PM
I discovered belatedly that I had to buy the MPEG2 plugin for VF online. How much does it cost (there's a standard and Pro version)? I already have TmpGenc which seems pretty good - but I haven't bought it yet. I will need to buy an MPEG2 encoder. Which is better? It's a bit of a pain having to render twice - once from VF and then again in another program.

There isn't a way to change settings in the $29 standard version. If you spend $100 for the pro version you may as well buy VV which has both.

VV is Vegas I assume? I thought that was $400. It's a long way from $100 to $400?

the_harper...

If you own VF, and upgrade to Vegas, it is $199. I got it for $149 as a special.
(I have not used the MPEG-2 yet).

Where/how did you get it for $149? I'd upgrade for that price, but not for $199.

Hi Jon,

That's good to know. I will have to check the specs of Vegas to see what else it would provide. At the moment I am thinking I will buy TmpGenc ($48) to get MPEG2 functionality. I am trialling it. I don't know whether I can justify $200 for Vegas, or whether the quality I'd get from the $29 plugin would be as good as TmpGenc.

If you are just doing hobbyist work (home video editing) then VF is fine with the standard mpeg plugin. If you are considering doing any professional work then go with Vegas Video. You won't be disappointed and it is worth the money!

I agree with ronaldf, it all depends on what you are doing. (I have not used TmpGenc).

Hey Stiffler, how did you upgrade from VF to Vegas for $149 instead of $199?

Stiffler wrote on 4/21/2002, 11:13 PM
The upgrade price was a promo. I'm not sure how often they come up, but I'll keep my eyes open.

Thanks. I'll do the same. $199 is just a little more than I want to pay at this point. I'd buy in an instant at $149.
