MPEG2 Problems

Ok, I don't know if this has already been asked. But I have videos that required a mpeg 2 decoder. Sony Vegas 8 Pro plays them when theyre on the timeline. But not when they are in the project media list and I want to preview them. However, it plays just the audio. What do I do so I can Auto Preview it without having to drag it to the timeline to preview it?

I'm not seeing this issue. MPG files are previewing fine in Media Manager.

Try removing/reinstalling MM. Also have a look at the codec pack on your machine.... you may have a few conflicting ones.

O wow, it says media manager not installed. Where do I get it from? I really need this.

Media Manager is a separate download and you can find it where you downloaded Vges8 pro and DVDa.

You can also preview in the trimmer. 8c gives you a new option to be able to preview in its own screen, in the preview monitor, or to an external monitor. There are also preview buttons located at the top of your project media window.

There are quite a few ways to preview without dragging to the time line. You need to sit and read up in the manual a little.

o ok...do you have any websites I can just find it at? Also, i can't see the effects i use on the preview. How do I fix this?

What exactly are you talking about here???

Are you talking about previewing a clip BEFORE placing on the time line? Or are you saying that you can't see your mpeg while it is ON the time line?

Previewing the clip before putting it on the timeline. When it is on the timeline it works fine. When I clicked the media manager tab it said it is not installed. I got the vegas download from this website but I don't see a separate media manager download.

But then you say thiis: "Also, i can't see the effects i use on the preview. How do I fix this?"
Which makes no sense at all because that's what the time line is for. In order to apply effects you must place your clip on the time line. You SHOULD be able to see the effects when the clip is on the time line.

If you want to PREVIEW your clip AS IS, BEFORE placing on the time line then you can just highlight the clip in Project media and press the play button at the top. You can also use Media Manager for this but it is not necessary.

no no no lol I know that. The effects was another problem I just had but I fixed it myself just now. As far as the previewing the video as is, it won't. It just plays the audio and not the video. But when the video is on the timeline it shows up in the preview device. So I don't know why it won't let me see it before I put put it on the timeline.

It SOUNDS like you're missing a codec.... or it's mucked up.... one of the 2.

Is this a trial version... or a hacked version (not saying you've hacked it but maybe you bought it from some one that did)

Trial versions and hacked versions are missing the mpeg encoder/decoders.

O ok. That would explain it. I downloaded a decoder but i've read somewhere that Vegas 8 doesn't support third party decoders. Thanks alot.

Hi,

maybe the problem is related to the new trimmer workflow in version 8.0c as described in the release notes:
"When the Show Video Monitor button in the Trimmer window is selected, video that you preview from the Vegas Explorer and Media Manager windows is played back in the Trimmer. Because the Trimmer is placed in the same window dock as the Explorer and Media Manager, you will not see your video preview. To preview Explorer and Media Manager video, you can drag the Trimmer to a new dock group, or you can turn off the Show Video Monitor button to preview in the Video Preview window."

Cheers
