Mpeg2's

mrcreosote wrote on 4/30/2004, 4:40 AM
I have some mpeg2 files created with vv4 rendered as Svcd Pal (Main Concept).
I have recently acquired a DVD burner and DVD architect wants to recompress these files before it will burn the DVD.
Question 1: Is there a way to get DVDA to burn these files without recompression.
Question 2 : Will I lose much if it does recompress.
The files are originally from Super 8 film and have value for content not quality.
First post to this forum , though have been a reader for some time, and have learnt lots.
Can't find the exact answers with a search,.
Any help appreciated.

Allan.

It has to re-compress because they are the wrong dimensions. SVCD it much lower the n720x586 (or whatever pal is, i'm in NTSC land!). The best hting you could do is use TMPGenc, convert the file to an uncompressed AVI (PAL DV res) and the nre-encode it at a high (8mbs) bitrate. But, since the movie is alreay at ~480x480 @ 2mbs, it's not going to look at better.

yes - you can use a 2 methods to burn svcd's to dvd's without re-compression .. one is use svcd2dvd and the other is to use dvdLAB ..
some pioneer players have a problem playing these - other than that, no real issues ..

info on how to -- here @ www.videohelp.com

as to "will i lose much" question ...

it depends -- just do it and see how it looks ... you may be much better to go to 1/2 d1 mpeg2 than to blow up to full d1 ... 1/2 d1 is completly within the dvd spec 100% and sometimes looks better for vhs dubs and svcd to dvd conversion .... for some odd reason DVDA would not handle non D1 mpeg2 resolutions or mpeg1 that are within the dvd specifications .. maybe that bug has been fixed in DVDA2 , i don't know ..

The DVD spec does require the player to support 1/2 D1 res mpeg-2 which if you are making VCDs is a good reason to use the CVD (Chinese Video CD) standard as you can just copy the files onto a DVD.
Pity that DVDA doesn't support that. Comment from Sony was that they didn't see much call for it, well that's true probably in the USA but then again China is a HUGE market, there's already a Vegas forum in China (sorry I cannot read chinese and the technical stuff throws the wife off). All I can say is come on Sony, wake up to the huge market potential. I'd add that I haven't seen a single Mac in China so you don't even have to compete with FCP over there. Do your patriotic duty and help reverse the balance of trade!
