MPG smartrendering..

many a tmie i work on stupidly huge longform edits and of a night, i let my machine prerender sections in chunks.
THis saves alot of time when im doing my final output

However now with MPG smartrendering, im thinking of changing this preliminary step to use MPG instead of DV AVI.

Now, as id be using variable, and id know what bitrates im using, would smartrendering work in this regard?
IM yet to really use smartrendernig of MPG as its always been flaky for me.. im yet to reinstall V8 (since 8a release) as im in between projects.

If i can cull that MPG encode process, that would save hours of rendering

couple of questions for SD and HDV

1) is mpg still flaking out at cuts and dissolves?
2) Are there any glitches anyones found so far?
3) Constant would obviously work best, however I dont have that luxury so variable will have to suffice.. Will the mainconcept MPG encoder do a clean smartrender?

i think thats about it.. id rather ask before i waste a whole night processing

After installing the 8.0a update, HDV smartrendering has been working flawlessly for me. I just rendered a 3-hour-long project with lots of cuts and dissolves and it worked perfectly. Of course, HDV is 25mbit CBR and I haven't tried SD-MPEG2 or VBR.

And there were no AV sync problems? That's pretty neat. Whenever I've edited MPEG in the past (with other apps) there are always sync issues.

John -

That three hour project...
was it three hours on the timeline or three hours in the render.

What specs were you rendering to, and how long did it take?

Thanks,
v

Vic,

It was three hours on the timeline with all HDV 1080-60i source material. Perhaps 10% of the project has titles, dissolves or other stuff that needed to be rendered and was not able to be smart-rendered. Rendering up the project takes less than an hour on my Quad-core.

If you're shooting DV, how is smart rendering going to help, seems to me it'd slow you down.

Bob,

Vegas has always smart-rendered DV, so I'm not sure exactly what you mean.
