Good detective work!

You will need to go to the homepage for Xvid, and download and install their VFW codec version for Windows.

Xvid is not natively supported in Vegas, which is a commercial application, for a variety of reasons.

thanks for the quick reply

but i need more help.

I downloaded and installed what was offered on the Xvid.org site, but it appears to be a developers tool rather than the codecs??

If the codecs were installed behind this software how do i get vegas to use them - because at this stage its still exactly the same

this one does offer VfW support for xvid: http://www.koepi.info/Xvid-1.2.2-07062009.exe

i can play the files using media player - but vegas just will not play the video

i would be grateful if you are able to help me get this working.

checking the properties of the files from within vegas it says it is using aviplug.dll...........does this need to change to be able to read the files??

It's possible that there's another avi codec with more "merit" in your system, so the xvid decoder gets unused by vegas. Maybe you want to uninstall any other codec packages you might have installed, at least for now.
