.mpgs from my digital Canon A40

my digital camera, Canon Powershot A40, can take up to 11" of digital movie at a pretty low rez. I took some sea lion footage while diving last month and inspite of the low (relative) quality, I would like to add it to a project. I put the clip in the timeline and it shows up as only audio, but plays in media player just fine. Is it possible that my .mpg plug in isn't working correctly? I can render in mpg1, but not mpg2 so this makes me think I haven't install correctly. Advice?

You are probably missing a codec or something. I had the same problem with the .avi files generated by my canon S40... only the audio showed up in VV (despite the fact that windows media player could play the video), and on the media properties it said something like "video stream is offline".

I looked in my camera owners manual and saw the .avi files were "motion jpeg", and I found a motion jpeg codec as a free download on the mainconcept website:
http://www.mainconcept.com/download/download.shtml

I installed that, and then everything worked fine in vegas.

good luck

I have a similar Canon (the S110) and I can load the clips into Vegas with no problems. You need the M-JPEG codec, I think got installed with the Canon software. There are other M-JPEG codec available (search the forum for Canon and codec, maybe).

Hint: If you are used to rotating the camera 90 degrees for still shots, and then rotating them in the LCD or on the computer, be prepared for the day you do what I did, which is shoot video rotated. Duh. Fortunately, I could use the Track Motion feature in Vegas to rotate it back, and it looked fine in the final piece, but I felt kind of silly.
