I installed Vegas 5.0 and all of the sudden I couldnt insert my MPEG1 movie into PowerPoint without it crashing. I found the hint below on another site and it fixed the powerpoint but then broke vegas. Is there a way to do both?

Hint if Vegas breaks PowerPoint ...

If you have an MPEG1 file that is crashing or otherwise acting funny,
particularly in mplay32, it could be the Vegas Main Concept MPEG splitter/decoder causing the problem. There are various versions of these decoers floating around, with various bugs.. and the unfortunate part is that tons of 3rd party companies ship these with their own products (Sonic Foundry, Adobe, Sorenson, Discreet....) to do MPEG decoding/encoding.

Another problem on another machine was that mplay32 would crash upon opening an MPEG-1; PowerPoint would also die... All caused by the Main Concept decoders. If this sounds like you, try the following:

Do a search on your C: drive or anywhere else you have installed
applications for a few files:

mcmpgdec.dll
mcspmpeg.ax
mcdsmpeg.ax

Rename the files with a "-" or "_" on the front. These are found in the C:\Program Files\Sony\Shared Plug-Ins\File Formats\MCMPEG" directory

Now close all windows and reopen powerpoint and re-insert your movie.

When I go back and rename the files back to the original names Vegas works again.

HELP!

Try only renaming the two .ax files.

That is all that should be necessary to stop the MainConcept decoder interfering with any other MPEG2 decoders you may have on your system. I suspect that the problems you are having with Vegas are due to your also renaming the .dll file, which is not a part of the officially recommended solution.

You can find Sony's official advice on this topic in the Knowledgebase - go to http://www.custcenter.com/ and search for "powerpoint". The answer is in the article entitled "Problematic MPEG playback in Microsoft PowerPoint."
