MS can't find DV device

Hi,
I'm new at DV, but love Movie Studio. Problem now is MS gives me message that it can not find my device. I can capture clips using XP movie maker, so I'm OK there, but can not export edited clips back to camera. I have captured using MS before, so this is a new problem. I have looked through menus, all I see is "reconnect to device", but I only get the same message that it can not find device, may be in use by another program etc. Any ideas? MS has run flawlessly up to this point, so a bit dissappointing now.
Thanks.

When you are in capture mode, make sure you have the correct device seleceted. Sometimes if you run the program before you turn on the camera, it will select something else.

While trying to capture, go to Video at the top of the screen and switch to Microsoft DV and VCR. Or try any other option available there. Microsoft DV and VCR is not an option until the camera is turned on. Microsoft DV is part of DirectX 8.1 and above

Also note that sometimes other editing programs (like MovieMaker) "steal" your capture card if you use them after installing Movie Studio.

Try putting your Movie Studio install CD in your computer. If you click "install" it will run a repair program which should steal it back.

At least until you run another editing program...

Well I've tried all suggestions, but still nothing. When I select microsoft dv-vcr, I get the same old message, "may be in use by another program". I put the installation CD in and did a repair, no luck there either.
Funny thing is, when I first opened MS, it was ready to let me capture tape! I then changed tapes so that I could export video, and was back to where I was with MS not finding device again.
This is a real downer. I was ready to tell anyone that would listen how great MS is (was).
Any more ideas out there?
Thanks for the responses.

I had a similar error message after I added a new hard drive and changed all my directories around. Go to VIDCAP, select OPTIONS, PREFERENCES, DISK MANAGEMENT and make sure the directories checked actually exist.
Probably a long shot, but worth a try.

You say it used to work in MS. What has changed? New program, new download, new hardware, changed preferences?

Are you using Firewire or USB?

Sorry if I sound like a jerk tonight, but this is getting rediculous.
I uniinstalled windows movie maker, just to see if there was a conflict there. After running Norton's "one button checkup", I was able to get MS to recognise my camera (most of the time). I seem to be able to capture, but can not print to tape. When I try to print to tape, it will sometimes give me old message that it can not find device, when it does find the device, I get clip loaded, hit print to tape. At this point it starts to record to device, then I lose signal. It continus to record to tape, but no signal = no picture.
Absolutely asinine, I'm going in circles and getting nowhere. WIll I need to uninstall MS and try a clean install?
Any hope for using this program?
Thanks again.

Thanks for the hint Electromen.
Yes, I have added a HDD. And having some problems with transfer rate. Unable to get new HDD in DMA mode. I have "enable DMA if available", but can olny transfer in PIO mode.
I copied a file from the second HDD to my original HDD, then used that fiile to copy to tape with no problem at all.
What do you think? Is the slow transfer rate on the new HDD (by the way, brand new, 7200 RPM) the problem? Would there be some other problem when I try to use a different drive?
Thanks

A follow up.
After uninstalling movie maker, movie studio has been finding my device. It will first tell me it can not find device, but when I open capture window it will see camera and let me capture fine.
The second problem on exporting clips to tape was a problem with the new HDD. It was not transfering fast enough to export to tape. Got the problem resolved with the new HDD (with great help in another forum also) and everything is working fine.
Thanks for the help and suggestions.

hi mgh.
was wondering what you meant by not being able to transfer fast enough from hard drive to tape?
i occasionally have a problem when i try to go from dv through my canopus out to analog audio & video to vcr. use an external WD200 gig firwire which i really like. sometimes when i go from the WD to analog out the audio & video plays, stops, plays, stops on & on. i use task manager to close some of the processes, or if i output a file from the internal drive (never a problem with that one), than try the WD external again, the problem clears up never to be seen for the rest of my computing session, or maybe there will be no problem next time either..its a random thing.

by the way, one time i do recall VF2 all of a sudden not seeing my capture device..dont know what happened, but i did a reset to defaults in the capture preferences, and all was ok again.

good luck,
Joe S

JoeS,
I'm afraid I don't know exactly what waht was going on. What I do know for a fact in my case, was my new HDD was in PIO transfer mode, which is much slower than UMDA. My problem was a bios setting on my Dell computer. Once that was resolved, my transfer rate went to UMDA mode5, and I was able to export with no problems at all. I was figuring it was along the same line as tryiing to capture to a slow HDD, it just isn't going to work well. My transfer rate was so slow coming from HDD to tape, I'm guessing that the camera/software/whatever, was not getting enough signal to record.
I have a long thread on another board aboout my transfer woes. It may be able to help you. Outstanding board on computer/DV at any rate.
