MS4 not Rendering correctly---for me

i'm gonna be long winded here, cuz i think u need see the way i am doing things--probably wrong but it seems ok to me.

i have some 2 year ol Motion JPEG "video" i shot on my digicam of my wife's dog agility runs. they are all less than 2 minutes per run. per a previous thread, i downloaded and installed a Morgan MJPEG codec so i could import the files into VegasMS4. i trimmed and then saved each file as an .avi. after i did all of them, i edited a few clips of dog stuff taken with my new MiniDV cc.

Using MS4, i added each of them onto the timeline, adding chapter markers and text to indicate the day, etc for each run. then i "Saved to disk" in .avi. everytime i did this, there are clips that are either missing, or the last few clips are dropped. for instance, when it creates the file, it says it should be about 6gb, but when it is done, it is only 2.5bg or so--this for a 20minute total video.

so yesterday i started over. i added all the files and created a .avi file and this took like 55mintues---but in looking at the file afterward, i found i forgot a chapter marker and 2 clips with their own marker, so i added them in the middle of the timeline---a total now of 12 markers. maybe this is a problem, but i shifted all the tracks to the right by more than the time of the 2 inserted clips, added the 2 clips, text and then shifted the moved clips to the left. it all plays fine in MS4.

in all the original chapter markers, there is a small number in the "flag", but in my new inserted ones there is not. i created a new .avi file, and now it takes 1.5 hours----almost double, just by adding a chaprter marker and 2 clips---this can't be---something is wrong. I'm using the orignal Project File and just adding a marker and the clips. no other programs were running, i have plenty of disk space.

Should have i deleted the markers, text and clips on the timeline until i reached the point where i added the new marker and clips, and then added them back in? this would be a lot more work. shifting them is bad enough.....

how do you folks add new clips and markers to an existing set of clips????
What did i do wrong??

thanks for any help,
ron

Couple thoughts come to mind. Sorry if you've already thought of these.

For your missing clips on the original render, maybe "Render Loop Region Only" was chosen and the missing clips weren't in the loop region when you started the render?

As for the increased render time after including 2 clips I'd say an extra 50% or so (55 minutes to 1.5 hours, if I read your post correctly) isn't a total surprise. Depends on how longs the clips were, of course, and whether there were any titles, transitions, etc. added along with the new clips.

As for the missing markers, I think you do have to do an "Advanced Render" and then specify to save the markers. I think you have to do this every time you do the render since it won't necessarily save those options.

I agree there seems to be odd stuff going on. Is your ultimate goal with all of the markers to create a DVD with chapter points? If so, you might just try adding the few extra chapter points in DVD Arch Studio as a workaround.

thanks for the reply,
the clips i added are like the rest---average about 1.5 minutes each, and yes there was 3 one line text, and 1 cross fade between the 2 clips. nothing fancy---i'm not there yet-- :)

Everytime i go to advanced render, the box is always checked to "Save the Markers", so i don't go there much.

One thing i should mention---I'm trying to save my avi files in the best possible way, so i have created my own Render selection, which is nothing more than Advanced Render/Custom/Video Render Quality set to Best---i have no idea what this does, but Best seems better than Good. I have not noticed any difference in file size however, so maybe it just takes a bit longer to Render. The Video Format is NTSC DV and i uncheck the Fast Video Resizing. i can't imagine i screwing something up with this.

My concern about no numbers in the Marker, MS4 was not seeing them, or because they were added out of order, MS4 got mixed up. That's why i asked about perhaps i should have deleted the Clips later on the Timeline from where i wanted to "insert" the new marker and clips....
