MTS files from Sony HD cam not opening in Vegas 8

I am considering upgrading to Vegas 8 so I can do format conversions and possibly some editing for some new clients who are shooting with HD cameras (Panasonic and Sony) . Being that I have had no use for HD before I am in the dark about a lot of this. I have tried to open .MTS files created with one Panasonic camera (model number not stored in my near capacity memory banks) and a Sony camera model HDR-SR1. Realizing that I could not do this with Vegas 6 (the latest version that I own) I tried opening them in a trial version of Vegas 8 with no luck. I do not even see .MTS as an option in the Import files of type options. Does this mean that I have to capture these files directly from the camera? Is there no work-around for this ? One of these clients is across the country and just expects to send me DVDs with the files.
Many thanks --- fultro

I don't know about the trial version, since (If I recall correctly) the trial doesn't have MPEG capabilities, but AVCHD files from the SR1, UX1, CX7, Canon HV10, and Panasonic SD1/5 all open without problems in Vegas 8 (paid version). I'm working with some of each of these files every day at the moment.

thanks for the quick response - but - still not working here, anyway -
possibly something to do with the fact that I am running XP 64 ?

did the format you are using come out after Vegas 6? If so, you're probably looking at an upgrade to vegas 8.

no, I used the original .MTS from the camera (via DVD-ROM copy) , and tried to drop it into Vegas 8. Also, I have tried various files off the DVD to be sure that there isn't a corrupted file on the DVD, and still come up with - "Vegas unable to open file" message . . . . . .

Like Spot said, MPEG and AVC(HD) does not work in the trial version. The full version of Vegas needs to be licenced and registered before it works.

Thanks MarcoB - that at least is a solid answer to my question. When Spot said MPEG I didn't realize at that point that that is what AVCHD is.

AVCHD is MPEG 4, sorry I wasn't more clear.
