MTS files open in 8.0c but not 8.1

I'm dual booting Vista Ultimate 32-bit and Windows 7 Ultimate Beta 1 64-bit. Running 8.0c in Vista, and 8.1 in Windows 7 beta.

I'm working on AVCHD footage from a Sony HDR-SD1 for a friend and the mts files open fine in 8.0c but won't open in 8.1, I get the "unsupported format" message. All other files seem to work fine.

FYI, unrelated to the above problem, I rendered a SD project in 8.0c and then the same project in 8.1 with the same settings, and render times were 2 minutes less using 8.1.

I've been using Vegas since version 2.0 (in Windows ME) and I've always had excellent results.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Dave

It could just be a Windows 7 beta problem.

I have this problem under Vista 64 after a reboot. The first time I open Vegas Pro 8.1 it cannot use any HDV/AVCHD media. I get "unsupported format". If I close 8.1 and reopen it again it can now read the files. This is very repeatable on my PC so I have to open 8.1 up twice each morning just to get it to work with HD that day.

Maybe your problem is similar. Try it a few times and see.

I experience precisely the same behavior on Win 7 64-bit. Apart from that, everything runs nearly flawlessly.

Just close/reopen again.

Thanks very much!

I simply closed and reopened the program and presto, it worked.

Thanks again,

Dave

I did some more investigating and this is part of a bigger failure. If you open Vegas Pro 8.1 for the first time and place a DV AVI file on the timeline and go to Render As you will ONLY see AUDIO render templates!!! So it looks like a major part of the video subsystem doesn't get initialized properly because the renderer doesn't acknowledge that there is even video on the timeline. Seems like a definite bug.

Just thinking out loud... could this be an issue ONLY if 8.0c and 8.1 are both installed on the same machine? With only 8.1 installed on the Vista64 machine I've not noticed that.

Also which was installed first? Could it be an issue where 8.1 was installed first but 8.0c should have been?

Those are good observations. I have both installed but I may have installed 8.1 first because I was using Vista 64 just for testing and then later decided to use it full-time and installed all the other Sony software.

As far as what "should" have been installed first, it should not matter. Anyone buying a new Vista 64 PC is probably going to install 8.1 first, find out that none of the plug-ins work and only 1/2 the renders, and then install 8.0c to compensate. So it may actually be a popular scenario.
