Multi track Mix down

I'm trying to figure out how do a live multitrack mix down and re-record to 2 tracks all within Vegas. Route the master outs to input busses and arm/record those? I am running the tracks thru a Mackie for mixing purposes and it seems easier to just try record that than automate volume envelopes then render that ... Is it possible? Anyone feel like laying out the basic steps. I'm using a Focusrite Saffire 14 as my interface via FireWire ...

Is there any reason you're not simply rendering the mixdown to a new file? That's the preferred way to go and doesn't involve any loops back out to other (possibly analog) hardware and then back in again. Got your mix all set the way you want it to sound? Go to File / Render As, choose stereo Microsoft Wave, give it a name, and click [OK].

Because it hasn't been mixed down as I said ! Unless by rendering to a new file can occur in real time while I'm actually mixing the tracks. Perhaps I'm just thinking in an old school days erroneously where you would play the 24 track through your mixing board and record that output to a 2 track. Take the Vegas outs to sound forge? Can you render in real time while manipulating vol envelopes?

Ahha, sorry, missed that part.

You can control the volume envelopes in real-time if you have a mixer/controller that interfaces with Vegas. I don't know that yours does.

Recording the output from your mixer into Sound Forge is probably easier than trying to record it back into the same session of Vegas.

Gagman, Vegas doesn't have a "live" way of easily looping the Output back to an Input, so you either have to do that by routing in your Soundcard (if it can) or by physically joining the Soundcard Output >> Input.... in either case, very likely the result won't be in strict sync with the original tracks due to latency. Or, as suggested, record in SoundForge if you can find a way to route Vegas Output to SoundForge Input... again, that depends on your Soundcard features, or possibly use some virtual loopback application...
However, the most "usual" way would be to setup your mix in Vegas, either static or with Vegas Automation and Envelopes, then use Vegas "Render" function to make a mixdown file.

Got it thanks! Saves me hours of trying to figure out how to do the impossible ! I'll post if I find a way,

Why would you want to mix tracks like that this millennium ?

The usual way is to use envelopes (either manually or drawn in real-time) to set level (etc) changes, tweak them by mouse if necessary, then Render the file !

Unless there is a particular reason that is has to be done in real time A(itself rather tricky unless you have a hardware control surface, and even then is hard labour.
