multi-track recording

hi
I am trying to record multitrack audio,
e.g: track 1 = music wav file.
tracks 2,3,4,5 etc = independant vocal tracks.
I need to be able to monitor pre-recorded tracks whilst recording new ones, so I have enabled play(listen) whilst record.
I am having trouble trying to record a new track without other tracks merging their signal with the new track. I have read the manual, which states that this software is a multi-tracker and that you can do what i need to, but it looks like im missing something.
I hope that its not a hardware problem and just something that im not doing correctly.
Hardware set-up: P4- 1.7g cel - 128mb - 20ghd -
soundcard: Hercules GameTheatre 7.1

if anyone knows what im doing wrong, a reply would be much appreciated.

Yeah you guys are right, this is a forum and problems and solutions should be aired here.

Here goes:
I had checked and adjusted the soundcards tab for on/offs and levels,
also had set-up in vegas pro the correct parameters to suit the soundcard.
The windows volume tab was all ok as well.

After reading a couple of the replied posts here, I pursued the audio input/output settings further.

To fix the problem, I ended up going to:
start>control panel>settings>multimedia icon>Audio tab>Advanced settings
from there I optioned to show the stereo mix on/off with slider, which was'nt displayed before but WAS active by default and I disabled it (the stereo mix).

an easy fix when you know what your looking for!
Now everything works perfectly.

I hope that this may help someone else in the future with a similar problem.
