MULTI-TRACKING HELP!!!

Okay, I own Vegas Audio, and.. have been working with it for about a year or so. I have pretty good knowledge of it's capabilities.
I have a RolandXP-50 that I run through a sound mixer and directly into
the mic input on the back of my computer.
Although this may not be the most... logical way of doing things, it's worked beautifully and I'm happy with this setup.
Here is the problem -
Recently our computer caught a virus and we had to re-install Windows98.
Since the install, none of my recording software has been working correctly.
The problem is that internally, when I go to add a track, the first track is
re-recorded onto the second track. I know this is an internal adjustment
I need to make or update and there is nothing I can do externally with
volume or any type of control.
I want to be able to listen to the first track I've recorded (a piano or guitar track) through headphones or speakers, while recording other tracks without re-recording the first track(s).
Can anyone help?! I'd owe you my LIFE. This is a big problem because
music is ... everything to me and I don't like to write without recording shortly therafter. It's habitual.
HELP!!!! :(
Thanks, Shannon

Unless this is a laptop you should connect the the Line In not Mic in...

Anyway double click the speaker icon in systray > Options > Properties > Recording > OK, select the input channel (Line In or Mic in) and not Mixed, Stereo, What U Hear or similar.

Goto Options>Properties>Wave Device. In there Vegas will default to the Microsoft Sound Mapper Driver. Select Windows Classic Wave Driver, and make sure you have your sound cards wave driver selected. Also in Vegas v2.0 there is a setup proceedure, can't remember it off the top of my head of exactly what you have to do, but you have to check the inputs and outputs to be used, so you have full access of all your inputs and outputs, you will have to create buses for the outputs if you have more than 1 stereo pair.

Ah, missed the The line in is checked part. You are sure it's checked in the recording window and not the playback window aren't you?
