Multicam

I have a show that I shot with 3 cameras. I brought in each camera as separate track on the timeline. I also created a timeline for CD aduio as each girl had a CD track of the music she performed to. Each song was sync'd with the girl performance on cam 1, 2 & 3. Each camera has a video and audio track. Each camera has gaps in video and audio for battery changes and each camera was started at a slightly different time at the begining. I manaully sync'd all audio and video tracks together. Now I want to multicam. I have watched no less that 6 youtube videos on multicaming in vages Pro 13 however not one video shows a process that actually works. If I try to insert empty events at the begining of cameras that started later, the audio and video on that track shift right when you insert an empty event. Why?

I tried to copy the audio from a camera to lay down on another camera that was off breifly for a battery change, both the video and audio paste in and shift the receiving track audio and video to the right.

The youtube videos say you just copy and past and it all works, apparently they are missing steps because nothing works like the videos depict.

I did splits on the audio from cam 2 and I can drag that audio section onto cam 3, but then I have a hole in the audio of cam 2. I just want to get one good camera audio track end to end (2hrs 20 min.) to use for ambuient sound so I only have to key frame one camera audio track to adjust audio levels. I did not have the luxury of a sound person so sound levels go from low to crushed during the performances and have to be jockeyed end to end.

I am new to editing, I tried doing this show originally in FCPX and it crashed and lost sync every day for 8 weeks, so I ditched it and downloaded Sony Vegas Pro 13. I was able to sync the show audio end to end without one crash or loss of sync, it only took one week of eveinings vs. 8 on FCPx. FCP was also taking 5 to 10 minutes to display audio waveforms everytime you resized the timeline. It was awful!!! Vegas never leaves you w/o a waveform. Way more better!!!

Also if I start multicaming this, in FCP, you can just switch video, I assume that is going to be my next issue. Will my Tascam DR60 audio track (show announcer) and CD Track not cut with the video and stay in sync?

No more Zucas but yes, Edea's. One is in Novice and the other in Intermediate.

I used to work with Z1U and an FX7, then two Z5U and now two NX3 and my AX100. Try to get audio straight into the camera from the sound system. I just bought my own mixer, dont want to rely on the rink to provide it.

Yes, once you are done with editing, you can put anything on top of the multicam track. You can also try nesting the multicam project in a new project and then do all your graphics. Nesting is something that I beleive no other NLE can do and it can be very helpful. I would edit Act 1 and 2 of our annual Nutcracker On Ice in two different projects, nest them both in one project and render it out for Internet, DVD and BluRay.

I would definitely start again as a new file - you can keep the current one as a back up. Put the camera with the audio you want to use most on the top track. Your Tascam audio etc should be on the very bottom. PE is VERY easy to use to sync...definitely use it! Then select all of your camera's video/audio tracks for the multicam track. Follow Kurt's and my own previous comments after that. I think if you run through the multicam for your video in/outs, then expand to multiple tracks and go through again for the audio (see my comments above) you may find it easier. Once you've done one successfully, you'll realise how easy it is.
